I posted this on the 458 forum and got some good replies, but since I still have the problem I am opening it up to a wider forum because latch mechanisms are pretty similar.

On my 2011 458, the luggage compartment latch won;t always engage. Used to be fine, now it is annoying and getting tougher to engage

I first tried adjusting the catch, both up and down, with 1/16 and 1/32 inch shims; no difference. I then noticed that when I push on the latch itself (lid still open), it does not always catch. This takes the hood adjustment out of the equation.

Others contributed some good ideas around the emergency-release cable binding, which I checked but was not the root cause.

I have a boroscope-type inspection camera which I am going to use to dive down deeper into the latch mechanism itself; not sure what that will tell me. I did already trying lubing the latch; no help.

I am open to any ideas!

Similar problem on my 360 spider. My issue was resolved when I replaced the solenoid, located within release mechanism, that activates by switch to release luggage compartment bonnet. Solenoid piston was binding. The hood was getting progressively more difficult to close.
No idea if applicable to 458 model.

Thanks! I will look into that, as mine is also getting more difficult to close, and I imagine the 458 layout is the same.

I assume you had to pull the entire luggage compartment apart to replace the solenoid?

Luggage compartment trim panels were not difficult to remove on the 360. Once front trim panel that covers the release mechanism was off, the solenoid was very easy to replace. Sold as a separate item for the 360 by Ricambi.

Vince - that's too bad that you haven't had any luck with fixing the latch. I was hoping that the cable was bound up but apparently that was not the case. As John said, could be the solenoid which is not letting the cable return to the proper position. Good luck and I hope this works.
