OK, Guys what do I do next. I have found a car. 1989 328 GTS Red/Tan VIN-ZFFXA20A3K0081967 It is about a 5 hr. car drive from me. The dealer has sent me high rez pics and the car looks amazing. It has 35,000 miles on it and they want $57,500.00 for it. Had a major service 09/04 at Shelton Ferrari and documentation to prove it. Has receipts for everything that has been done to the car and has sent me copies. A few rock chips on the front and normal wear of the drivers side seat leather. I finally found one-- now I don't know what to do. The dealer has offered to do a PPI. Should I let the dealer do it or have another unbiased dealer look it over. The salesman told me the lead mechanic there has worked on Lambo/Ferraris for over 30 years and he would be doing the PPI. What would you guys offer him? I would fly or drive down to look it over before I bought it definatly. If the deal goes through, any one know of a good transporter. Would be coming from N.C. up to MD. and it's new home. Anything I should ask??
I'd probably want an independent PPI, unless the dealer is prepared to remedy anything they find wrong and/or warranty the car for 90 days after purchase, and negotiate and remediation costs into the purchase price. When I bought my car, it was based on the PPI the dealer did, but the car was on consignment, so they didn't have anything to lose by doing a thorough PPI and finding everything that was wrong with the car. We negotiated price based on their PPI, and they did all the repair work. Even extended me a serious discount on the work when it exceeded the PPI estimate. Guess it just depends on how comfortable you feel with the dealer, as to how you go. And, as to transporting it, NAH!!, fly down, drive home, it's only 5 hours right? What better way to get to know your new car!!
Actually I have been pricing these cars for about 6 months, the 88 and 89 GTS cars depending largly on mileage are going between $46k-$62K. I know that is a big gap, but largly it depends on the mileage. I found a 1988 with 3400 miles he wants 74K. I found another with 101,000 miles and he wants 42K. So there is a big price gap. I guess in the end a car is worth what someone will pay. Honestly I will NOT pay 57K for it, I will probably offer 45k and then the haggling will begin.
I beleive AJS328 used to own this car. His name is on some of the paperwork. If anyone can track him down I would like to speak to him.
Here I am to save the day!!! It was indeed my car very recently. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have.
LOL, as soon as i read the serial number, i exclaimed it out loud and jumped up in my chair...! Yes, that car DEFINITELY belonged to Gus... It's one of the MANY 328s he's owned in the last... week or whatever... i'll call him and see if i can get him on here...
Buying a car from within "the community" can be a good thing. I know. Let us know what you do! P.S. Don't you know you've already missed the deal of the century from Kessler Motor Cars?? A 1982 328 with a six speed for under $30K!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4556973594&category=6212
89s command a premium.....but $57k is a bit steep for a car with 35k miles on it and some wear. Even at a dealer you would be wise to get it closer to $50k. I went by Shelton a few months ago and they had a red/tan 87 with 20k miles in fantastic shape and they also wanted $57k. If you dont mind earlier 328s it seems they can be had for under $45k with similar mileage.
This will sound biased because he's my friend, but i think about half of those miles are "Augustine miles" and i don't know anyone in the world who loves 328s more than Augustine... i think he loves them more than Fioravanti himself... Not that that excuses the price, i'm just saying...
Congrats on finding a great car! $57k may be a little high considering the mileage, but you should be able to work something out. But, don't listen to all these guys who are going to tell you it should cost $40k. I looked for several months and never found a decent car for $35-42k. I bought a great 87 328 with 27k miles for $46k and a lot of people here said I overpayed. I am sure you have looked at many cars, so you know what they are going for. Good luck and let us know what happens.
You obviously haven't been keeping up with the pricing on 328's lately. Do me a favor and help me find one in as good as shape as this one with similiar mileage for 10k less and I will buy two. 57k is the asking price--- you wouldn't go to a Toyota dealer and see a 4runner with a price tag of 38k and say ok here's my 38k. Of course not you haggle, wheel and deal. I will get a fair price or I will move on and keep looking. The good thing is I don't NEED the car I WANT the car. So I refuse to fall in the trap of --Do anything to get it--Even pay way more than I should.
The reality is that there are wide variations in 328 pricing even taking into account year of production and mileage. Here's another one of Augustine's 328's currently on E-Bay. It's a 1989 azurro blue with 58K miles with Buy It Now for only $44K: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6212&item=4558953519&rd=1 I test drove this very car 6 months ago in Southern California where the prior owner who personally drove the car from the east coast was willing to sell for $39K. Here's a 1989 black 328 with 46K miles selling from Tennessee via consignment through Cavallino Motors for $44K: http://www.4ferrari.com/1989_328GTS_black.htm Here's an early 1988 328 prunia (purple) with 27K miles that didn't sell on E-Bay with Buy It Now $41K: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4554448453&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT Here's a red early 1988 328 with 34K miles listed and unsold several times on E-Bay from Georgia that the owner will sell for under $45K: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4545345563&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT Here's a late 1988 1/2 red 328 with 28K miles selling for $45K: http://www.hemmings.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/dealers.detail/hmn_vehicle_id/221065 Another red early 1988 328 with 21K miles asking $46K: http://www.ferrariclubofamerica.org/classifieds.cfm 1989 red 328 with 24.5K miles asking $54K: http://www.dupontregistry.com/search/srDetails.asp?itemid=230105&sessionkey={C833ADAA-21FE-4F6A-B5D9-B17D6BB19A2F} Prices drift down in the winter months. Regionally, 328's sell lower in the southeast, Arizona, and southern California. Northern California and New England command higher prices. Texas is in the middle. Red always commands a premium. Very rare colors can be a real bargain but are hard to sell. Black cars also seem to sell at a discount.
BAM! Now that's informative. If only I had stumbled onto a post like this regarding a 348 or TR when I was doing my search. Nicely done. BT
we could avoid all those dealer upcharges by notifying our fellow fchat members whe n we are going to sell !
I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this. The Ferrari market seems to be littered with my old 328's!!! LOL!
Is the car in question being sold through a dealer? If so,I wonder what kind of mark-up they have on the car. Assuming Agustine sold it to the dealer (thats a big if) maybe he can help you get an idea of what the dealer would be willing to take for the car?
Augustine and I just had a conversation about that. So I have a good idea what a FAIR price will be. I actually have narrowed it done to 2 cars. Both very close in price, one is in NC the other in FL. Both have had documented major service, one has 35k miles the other 23k miles. That is the biggest difference in the two. Not sure want to do, but go look at both of them.
My question is why are you buying this car or even thinking about it ? its 5 hours and you need a transporter ? why buy it if you can't drive it 5 hours. Sorry, don't mean to sound nasty here but it makes no sense to me
