Yes our wheels and tires are wider.

Last year we ran Pirelli but this year we may make a change.

Yes, the smiley face would have helped. :)

BTW, the mileage you report on Hoosiers is about the equivalent of 4-5 heat cycles for me, so similar to my 2011 experience but much worse than the longevity I was getting in 2010.

Did you see any change over that period of time?

"Yes our wheels and tires are wider."

We would love to run wider fronts!

Our cars must be a lot heavier, as well. We're every bit of 3k, even with our svelte, fit driver.

I'm racing my air cooled 911 at MSR Houston this weeked when I overheard a friend of mine complaining about bad tire wear. The pictures below are a Hoosier R100 from the right rear of a Porsche 964 widebody, taken after the 5th heat cycle. Camber was set at -2.6 degrees. He has been running the same suspension set up for a long time now and he checked it before this event. The cording is the outside edge, the heavy slope change is the inside edge. This is largely identical to what I have been experiencing.

Not looking good for the 2012 tire budget.

I have raised this problem with the Sponsorship Manager and his response is that it must be our fault, our installation, our set up! Hoosier cannot be having a problem because the lawyers have not called (my words) derived for MHz reference to people of consequence. So I think this also means that we need a tire service company at every event. Without these guys it means that we have to assume no more than 4 cycles per set. Whereas if they could be flipped I think we could get 6 cycles per set. So far I have 9 cycles on the set I used at Daytona. But they are roller skates now. I could not get them to turn he rollers ona Dyno last week.

With setup changes and a sympathetic driver, I've seen VERY competitive times on two different 5 to 6-plus heat cycle sets today... It may be an issue with setup and the loose nut behind the wheel. :)

vlamgat, you say 9 cycles on Daytona tires? Sounds pretty competitive with other manufacturers.

Be nice to have tire support. Sure wish you could get Woodman to come. He's terrific.

Just as long as everyone is on the same tire...

The Daytona tires are a different construction than R80 and R100 and they are not a proper road race tire. Yes, they last but are MUCH slower than competing brands. Lasting a long time is nothing to brag about if you are also slow.

When I first had a problem in April of last year Hoosier verified my set-up as correct and ended up giving me 4 tires under warranty after I sent them back for inspection. Would not admit fault though.

I use to have VERY competitive lap times on the 5-6th cycle, but not anymore. Now they are corded. Same driver, same set-up. So what happened?

Same thing with my friend's tires in the picture. Nothing changed other than the batch of tires. So what happened?

When there is only one variable that changes its hard to ignore that variable.

    We'll find out in March.

Tires are one of the largest budget items in most racing efforts.

With the field tight, it can mean the difference between go or go home.

No prize for longevity. This ain't no DE. :)

My issue is why are 3 different cars set up with negative camber wearing their outside edge? It makes no sense unless the tie rods are so loose that on left turns all 3 cars are behaving like live axles without Panhard bars a la a Spridget or a 30s vintage MG?

The Daytona tire is supposed to be very different from the 100 or 80 series slick that we have been running (at least in Texas) since 2007. I have probably been through 30 rear sets since I switched from Pirellis and I have never worn at outside section. My fronts wear very evenly despite 2 or 3 alignments every year and I always set up with 2.5 degrees of negative front. Rob and our Porsche friend have greater negative camber but we all see this phenomenon.

And yes tires are a huge part of the cost but it's one that we have all bought into in different degrees. However the assumption is that the supplier is giving us a fair shake with the product in order to have their name on our cars. It would be a pity to have to get to Road Atlanta before we get their attention.

On the subject of tires, I would be glad to participate in any pre season testing.

At this point, though, it might be better to continue to use the old tires for a while. It's awfully late to change from a compound we all know.

I talked to Pete at Universal a couple of weeks ago and he said John has been silent about tires, leading him to believe that we will once again be on Hoosiers. He was certainly ordering them for his team.

I've increased negative camber to -3.0 on the front of my 355 to try and deal with the tire wear. In theory this is more than Hoosier tells us to run, but as long as my outsides are wearing faster than the inside and tire temps remain balanced, I see no reason to dial it back down. I've only run 1 session with this set-up so far, so will be interesting see see how this set-up/batch of tires holds up.

This is a good and validated approach. Should be in your set-up guide! :)

We are still in negotiation with Hoosier on sponsorship, 95% certain we will be on Hoosiers again next year.
