    well, I bought a 90 348tb. Yellow with a blk/brn interior. Two owner car, the first owner had it 5 years and second 14 years. Has 16k on the speedometer. The second owner put less than 1k miles per year on the car. Stored inside one of those air filled bubbles. The car literraly does not have a single scratch on it. There is a scrape under the front bumper other than that everything works, drives and runs fine. The interior door handles needed the oven cleaner treatment. I paid 35k for the car.

    Checking the service history (here is my concern)..it is obvious that there was very little maintenance done. Mostly oil changes etc but no engine out service at all. So it has 16k and 19 years on the belts. Before I bought it I talked to the mechanic who had been working on the car. He told me that I find it to be exceptionally clean but in need of a major. The more I read and learn the more I understand the improtance of regular maintenance.

    So, next week I start a 30k major. I have a lift and most tools in my shop. I have always owed mid year corvettes....65, 66....and when searchling for them finding a car relatively untouched and all original was considered a good find. I am not certain that is the case at all with these 348's. I have pulled up all the info I can find from you guys on the engine out service.
    jAfter readilng all of the stuff the past couple of weeks, I just found a NEW post regarding welding the lower belt gear fence and changine the chain tensioner. Is there anything else that I need to really be cncerned about? Is buying a car like this a bad idea in the "Ferarri world".......................bye and by, I really, really like the car and I am not too cheap to have the service done. I just really enjoy working and learning about my own cars, thats all.

    Any replies greatly appreciated.
    Bye the way, the classic Corvette community has books and videos which covers stuff like engine out, rebulding, body lifting etc. Seems like someone here could market something similar for the benefit of all the new owners. For one thing it would give guys a good understanding of what they should expect and whether they can handle the job. I have to admit I am a little intimidated about working on a Ferarri.

    Welcome to the 348 brotherhood!!! Mine is a 90ts... 86426. Be sure to put your car into the 348 registry :)

    Once you get the lump out, take your time, have fun, and by all means, address the following areas:

    * Belts, bearings
    * Oil Pump TSB
    * Lower driven gear
    * Transmission ring nuts
    * WP rebuild, or replace

    Anything less, and you'll be back into that 348 sooner, rather than later.

    Congrats on the car.

    Isn't it amazing that we find all these cars that did NOT have a major for 12, 13, 14, 15 or 16 years with their first or second owner?
    And then, when we buy them as the third, we religiously do an engine out service every 3-5 years...

    I second what Daniel said. The oil pump update is often overlooked, yet overlooking it can be oh-so-expensive.

    And for Christmas, you might think about the LeMans Grill aka Husker Grill - it looks great in yellow. Shameless plug I know. ;)

    I bet you find working on that car easier and more fun than any Corvette. :)

    By the time you are done, you will be a factory certified 348 mechanic and chuckle every time you think about your trepidation, the "mystique" of Ferrari mechanicals, and the surprising reality.

    thanks to all for your comments - I take each to heart. There are more items to address from you guys than what I have found during my 30k engine out service info. I thank each of you for bringing the additional information to my attention. I absolutely agree that now is the time......I have some pics and as soon as I figure out how to post them I will.

    Anybody have any difinitive information regarding the water pump? I am aware of the guy who rebuilds them. There is also a posting on Ebay for pumps as $99. A member of this forum indicated that he had an engineer check one out and that it was as good as having one rebuilt...(someone seemed to think that the ebay guy was purchasing them from the rebuilder). I could understand all that except what about the core? Any thoughts - I sure don't want to make a mistake here....but if it is the same then I will have an extra core around.
