Hey all. I recently looked at the diaper on my 84 QV and saw that rust was taking its toll (I hate the term "diaper" and prefer "rear grill"). At any rate, I started reseaching what I needed to do and the forum consensus from others is that you remove the grill, remove the rust, and repaint it with high temp auto paint. Perhaps that works and is durable, but if you have found that it's not, then I have an alternative.

Check out gunkote http://www.kgcoatings.com/gunkote.html . In addition to a Ferrari owner, I am a machine gun dealer (don't ask) and many old firearm finishes are restored using Gunkote. It's an inexpensive spray that you put onto a pre-heated part. It gives a flat black, durable, flexible, and highly corrosion resistant finish which can withstand 500+ degrees F. Thus if a part (or all parts of a part) can fit into an oven, then gunkote ought to be considered for a durable flat black finish.

Just thought that I'd add my .02 since I guessed that there weren't too many gun nuts onboard here.

    Hi Andrew,

I think you may agree with this statement of mine?

There may not be many "gun nuts," in the ranks of FChat, I think there are more than many of us realize, but there are some really "Big Shooters" and "Big Guns," among us.

I really like your ideas on using Gunkote, for protective finishes on our cars.

    Ciao...Paolo

I like it! Does it work on steel only?

Nope, it works on aluminum too because I've used it dozens of times on aluminum. Actually, I've never used it on stainless, so I cannot vouch for using there. If you don't like your initial results--reheat and respray and it will come out great looking. Only after I posted did I realize that they now offer it in other colors (e.g. red, blue, etc.). I am postive that it would look wonderful on brake calipers, but am not sure if their red is the same as our rosa (but they apparently do make custom colors). The only limitation here is that the part is supposed to be pre-heated to about 300F, as I recall, but I have gotten away with 275F+/- when I could not fit all of a large part into the oven.

At any rate, I've been more than pleased with what it does for firearms.

p.s. as I mentioned, another guy's post made me take off my rear grill today and the mounts were almost eaten away with rust. I'm not too sure what I can do about it now as the mounts are too far gone for rust-proofing to make any difference.
