I have a 97 355 Spider. The central locking has been a bit intermittent at times. I have replaced the central locking ECU that sits under the passenger side fuse box area. Whether I use the key fob or the internal switches the central locking system is not engaging correctly. The central locking door pins next to the window just seem to hop up and down but not engage correctly
Has anyone got a cure or experience of this problem on their car. The doors are aligned correctly with the door catches.

Will the door pins stay down if you use the keys to lock the door? Is the key locking process smooth?

It sounds like there’s a faulty internal microswitch in one of the lock actuators. If you can get the pins to go fully down even momentarily, it means that the latch mechanicals are probably ok, but the Door ECU needs to see both internal microswitches in the lock actuators indicating the actuators are extended (locked) before it will allow both doors to lock

The OEM actuators are relatively cheap, but you’ll probably need to remove the internal door card at minimum to get access to the latch to replace the actuator. Since the driver’s side is the door most used, that lock actuator is probably faulty.

When ordering the lock actuator, buy some door card plastic clips. You may also need some plastic trim removal tools to protect the door card leather.

Don’t buy aftermarket lock actuators. Despite physically looking like the Ferrari ones, the plunger travel may be different and the micro switch trigger point may be different.
