Was hoping we might assemble a census of dyno tested horsepower helpers for the 328 and their impact against base HP in one thread. Some "potentials": 1) Tubi versus factory exhaust? 2) Test pipers versus with the cats? 3) Various airfilter replacements (KN etc)? 4) Others??
How well does the 3.2 handle boost? I'v seen twin turbo packages for the 328, one specifically mentioned that the stock gaskets would fail, which obviously a stronger gasket would be provided. Also does going FI with the 328 mean lower compression heads? Of course going supercharger with this car would mean a stronger crank... How much would all of this end up running price wise? (Not that it matters, I'm just curious)
US spec cars are already pretty low compression. The gasket issue has been discussed before, and if you want is available (as well as the turbo kit) from site sponsor Norwood, and possibly Nick Forza as well. Not sure we need a new crank for that setup... And speaking of cranks that reminds me... 1. You can also supposedly go with a stock 348 crank, cut a bit off on one end, and drop it into the car. Good for a nice torque boost and hp gain for an inexpensive part if you get it out of a wreck and can do the labor yourself.
2. Also, if I recall, trash the stock CSI and get a nice aftermarket...best 'bang for the buck' if I remember for our cars. Mark? Can you confirm that?
Oh and before I forget, the tubi is probably the worst way dollar per performance option for our cars. But hey, it sounds like heaven, and I highly recommend it to anyone.
I just figured, from experienced with blown cars, typically superchargers wear on crankshafts fairly heavily, that's why I figured it would take something alittle stronger, usually forged steel, however, as you know, I dont have any exp with ferrari's so I'll be quiet now and learn.
Up to about 15 psi you don't need anything, just put it on. That will get you about a 100% hp and torque increase with a good intercooler. My QV is hitting 22 psi at redline with all stock internals except the valve springs so I would have to say anything you may have heard about this or that not being strong enough is untrue. I can confirm the clutch needs to be upgraded though.
Your thoughts are valid, I just thought we ran forged factory cranks in our cars. Good time as any to ask, don't we run forged factory cranks? I remember reading it in a thread a while back. Mark should know, reading his posts is from where I gleaned a bit of what I know...
Yes, that's probably true. Russ did a weber conversion and picked up about 20 rwhp. An EFI conversion will give you at least the same. Once the CIS is gone you can add some more cam too and pick up anouther 10-20 hp. Plan on $3000 for the conversion. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26761
The rods and pistons are forged, but I'm pretty sure the crank is billet steel. The GMC blowers with a big 3" belt look great but do put a lot of strain on the crank. The newer and much more efficient screw types or even an eaton roots type with a 1" ribbed belt and a bypass valve are much gentler. GM and Ford among others have been bolting them on production engines for about 15 or 20 years now.
Ooooh. I forgot, were talking about Ferrari and not General Motors. I was just used to factory forged cranks in the Mustangs (03 Cobra and the older 5.0's)
As long as they're steel and not alluminum, from what I know, the part shouldnt have too much trouble.
Yeah...most aftermarket performance parts would be a set down. A stock modern ferrari engine makes more hp/liter than a nascar engine....and lives a lot longer at the same time. The cranks are billet steel and are also nitrited , crossdrilled, and radiused...basically the engine comes stock with the best crank money can buy. A friend of mine who drags a '68 mustang show my crank and wanted to know where I had it made. He flat refused to believe it came in the engine and was actually angry with me that I wouldn't give with the name of the shop.
Well that's good to here, and only makes sense (Enzo's product would have had a hard time making a good name for itself if it fell apart after a couple thousand miles) Yeah, well like I was saying earlier I just got my hands on this 03 Cobra, and the big deal is how it has all fully forged steel pistons, crank, and connecting rods, iron block, etc. After reading this thread that sets me at ease about adding maybe a mod or 2 to these Fcars, it seems to be a common misconception that ferrari's come from the factory at there limit and there isnt much head room for performance improvement. Anyway sounds like I'm going to have alot of fun with this 328 when I finally get my hands on one.
