Oh, forgot, to say..what caused the wiring and contacts to burn = fuel pump taking too much current? So replacing the fuel pump is probably a wise step.

The wiring and contacts were acting as a "fuse" , maybe the real fuse has been replaced with an over-rated (too high amps) fuse, or maybe there is no fuse? Check the recommended fuse amperage is being used so the problem does not return. Or use a separate inline fuse thats easy to get at and check.

    Regards,
    Ron

I think it's better to say that the (normal) high-current draw of the fuel pump caused the (poorly-designed) connection to overheat (rather than the fuel pump overheated). If you fix the connection well, you shouldn't have a problem, but IME a new, "tight" fuel pump will draw even more current (~11A) than a used fuel pump (~9A) -- which puts an even higher thermal (I^2*R) stress on that connection.

Same thing happens on a TR to the high-current AC, Water Fan, and/or Fuel Pump connections:

My bad -- sorry for repeating what you posted. For some reason I focused on the phrase "the fuel pump overheated", rather than the correct meaning of that sentence.
(Not the best image, but) Here's one of the TR fuel pump connections starting to get a little toasted:

What 91TR says sounds like the likely cause, the normal fuel pump stressed the wiring and connectors. Only problem I have is if the current draw weakens over time then the stress on the wiring gets less. However it is repeated stress and that will also cause a failure.

I have also seen DC coil motors take more current as they get older, since the internal insulation breaks down with age and heat. Thus an old fuel pump can start taking more current. This would be my theory.

Thus, I recommend being 100% safe:
    replace the pump
replace the wiring and weak contacts (or better bypass the wiring with new wiring)
add the inline fuse mentioned earlier

    otherwise next time burning contact+fuel=fire!

    Regards,
    Ron

Looks like I need an accumulator to solve a similar problem on my 81 Mondial. Problem is I would really like to have it by Friday so I can take the car to a show this weekend. Autozone and Advance Auto said they don't carry the part.

I tried the Auto Parts Headquarters website refrenced earlier in this thread, and they don't have the specific part number mentioned earlier, but they show two other parts when I enter the BSH008141 part number. They are BSH008127 and MBZ005341. My question is, would either of these other two accumulators work? If you enter the BSH008141 in the search box on their site it pulls up pictures of the parts I mentioned, and from what I can tell they look the same.

I have heard it is not a bad idea to go ahead and replace the fuel pump check valve while doing this, does anyone know where I can find that part at?

Also, any leads on where I could get my hands on one of these this week? Thanks!!
