Occasionally I have problems hot starting my 512BB. Normally this happens after longer highway drives (normally sitting in a service station). Cold starting is never a problem. Any tips would be appreciated. Thaks.

    assuming it's a carb car....

assuming the car is properly serviced and tuned correctly......

to hot start you need to let the fuel pumps run a for a while (ign on, but do not crank) to fill the carbs after some evaporation. Typically 20 seconds is enough. Then just slowly press the throttle as you crank the engine, keep going all the way to full throttle if need be, and it should fire up.

if it still refuse to fire, DO NOT lift off the throttle, but give the starter a short breether to cool off and recover the battery voltage a bit, then try again.

If you lift off the throttle you will risk flooding it when you re-apply as the pump jets wil squirt again. It's not the endo of the world, but it will make it harder.

if it won't go after say 3 attempts, you have a servicing problem, not a running or starting problem.

Get the car checked out on an oscilloscope to verify good ignition kv readings and proper timing and tune settings.

    Hi.............

    Great advice, Ferrarifixer !!!!!

My 1979 BB512 starts every time when very hot using this procedure. Just be sure to quickly release pressure on the throttle pedal when the engine fires, or it will hit the redline in neutral !!!

Great advice and much appreciated. It is a carb car and servicing is religiously kept up to date. It sounds like when I have had problems, I have not been letting the fuel pumps run long enough before cranking.
