I'm planning a trip to various countries next week in my 355 Spider, and I could use some advice because I've never done this before. I live in London, and I'm planning to drive down through Germany down through Austria, and into Italy. The thing is, I'm planning to just find hotels as I'm going along (I've got a quite a few guide books) instead of booking in advance. I am thinking that at this time of year it should be easy to get rooms at most hotels. Is this a bad idea? Also, can anyone recommend any good hotels (preferably with garages that will take cars with low ground clearance) in Frankfurt/Modena/Rome/Italian lakes/Portofino that aren't mega-expensive?

Marcus Definitely stay at Hotel Giardinetto, Pettenasco on the shores of Lake Orta in Italy. Very reasonable prices (around 80 per night inc Breakfast) and one of the finest restaurants in Italy IMHO. If you get there give my regards to Ricardo the Maitre'D, I took him out in my 550 last week it's a good base to work from for Monza, Milan, the Lakes etc
We normally stay in Bellagio a very pretty town just up the lake from Como. You are a quick boat ride from Como and Menagio. The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is very nice, but quite pricey. The Metropole also nice and more affordable.
