HOTHOUSE MEDIA ANNOUNCES THE ACQUISITION OF OCTANE MAGAZINE AND THE HISTORIC MOTORING AWARDS

    19 December 2023 – UK: Hothouse Media

The market-leading monthly classic car magazine Octane and the prestigious Historic Motoring Awards event have been acquired by UK independent publisher Hothouse Media.

Octane and the Historic Motoring Awards join Hothouse Media’s quarterly Magneto magazine, its annual The Concours Year book, the mould-breaking annual Concours on Savile Row event and its contract publishing division to form one of the most influential media and events businesses in the global classic and collector car market.

The acquisition by Hothouse Media also reunites the original founders of Octane – Robert Coucher, Sanjay Seetanah, Geoff Love and David Lillywhite.

The four were already highly experienced in the classic car market when they started Octane in 2003. Octane soon became known for the high quality of its writing, photography and design, along with its household name columnists, which have included Jay Leno, Sir Stirling Moss, Rowan Atkinson, Nick Mason, Derek Bell and Stephen Bayley. In time it became one of the most authoritative and entertaining publications at the top end of the classic car market, and 248 issues later remains a highly influential publication, with licensed editions in The Netherlands, France, Germany and Japan and a circulation in excess of 30,000 copies per issue.

Commenting on the acquisition of Octane and the Historic Motoring Awards, Geoff Love, Managing Director of Hothouse Media, said, “David and I are delighted to add Octane and the Historic Motoring Awards to the portfolio of Hothouse Media. They strengthen our position within the classic and collector car market and will allow us to offer commercial partners multiple ways to reach the most active and influential participants and enthusiasts in the hobby.

Octane is a fantastic brand that has been delighting audiences for over 20 years. As we take stewardship of the publication once again, we're looking forward to working with James Elliott and the Octane team to ensure that the magazine has the investment and support it needs to thrive in the coming years.”

Commenting on the sale, Julian Lloyd-Evans, Executive Director at Autovia, said, “We are really pleased to be able to find a fitting home for Octane and the Historic Motoring Awards. Hothouse Media have proved with their portfolio that they understand the classic car media business and we know that the brands are in safe hands and will flourish under their new ownership.”

One can only hope that Octane magazine will become more reliable and subscribers will now actually receive the monthly issues..........

It's an interesting development, may just be me but I think Octane needs a bit of a shake up. The core articles are still excellent but the repeating features/talking heads are now just repeating themselves from earlier issues.

eta: Interesting that James Elliott is now at the helm of Octane, I think he previously allowed Classic and Sportscar to become stale and on repeat each month with nothing new to say.

I’ll give James full credit for getting my subscription problems solved. It seems like the publisher’s commitment to the title hasn’t matched the quality of the content. I do read the columns every month and I hope they keep Bayley and Coucher.

Proof that we're all different, I think 2 of the worst pages in terms of reading the same nonsense every issue.

I used to subscribe to Octane, but dont any more. I look at it each month at the book store and buy it here and there. The over all quality has gone down and some of the articles are just boring. I do like the adjunct car things - watches, and history etc... and the racing coverage. I would assume its hard to make every issue a knock out... but when they show up its usually very good.

Since Hot House (Magneto) is the acquirer it seems more likely that Octane will change. Frankly I find Octane to be the more satisfying publication. Sadly, my guess is that Magneto actually wants to own the Historic Motiring Awards, not so much the magazine, so Octane will eventually fade away….

If you receive Magneto’s emails you can see that they’re all about “intersectionality” and “leveraging” and other MBA buzzwords. It’s all a bit much these days, what with the proliferation of concours, shows, rallies, races, tours, awards shows, etc., all jockeying to get more clicks and eyeballs; sponsors, partners, subscribers, lash ups between auction houses, publications, insurance companies, publishers, promoters. I’m glad our obsession is thriving but it’s all becoming a bit homogenized, it seems to me. The problem is that success in our society is measured in cash which is attracting corporate interest but driving up costs and limiting access for actual enthusiasts.

Sorry. I guess this could be its own thread. Rant off.
