I just logged into my Hotmail, now "Windows Live Hotmail," for the first time in a few weeks. My account is totally empty but for a greeting email. I've had this account since 1997 and had maybe 4,000 messages stored in my folders. Gone.

Where did it go? Are they going to restore accounts?

Oh. I just googled and found on other forums that they are now cleaning out people's accounts if they don't log in for 30 days. 11 years of contacts, messages - which I was keeping as a diary since most are from my college years - all gone. ****. ****ing ****heads. I can't believe it. I'm in shock, really.

I thought email had to be archived "in perpetuity". It's probably somewhere, you might not have access to it though.

They purged mine a while back. The only thing I miss is the address book.

I'd bet if there was a subpoena it would all be back.

    Call a lawyer ;)

I had the same problem a few years back. I believe after 30 days of not logging in, the account is cleared and put on "inactive" status.

    Solution:
I emailed the help people through my account, and Voila... a few days later, everything was back.

Hope it works for you too.
    Happy Holidays.

Hard to believe people still use Hotmail, I had issues with my account so I let go the way of the virtual round file.

There is no way that I can believe that you did not see just how foolish that idea was.

You actually trusted Microsoft to keep your junk safe on their servers for years on end?? Are you insane????? Trusting Microsoft....??

That rule has been around since forever(atleast since M$ took over). The reason is/was because they tried to sell it as a service so paying would mean not needing to log in monthly and more space etc, then gmail came out and changed free email account services but for some strange reason hotmail still has the same weird 1mth rule.

I'm shocked that in 11years you didn't think to backup your contacts list at least once.

As Skyler suggests just shoot them an email, they would have backups for atleast a couple of months.

A bit of useless trivia -

Microsoft Hotmail's servers run on a Linux based operating system.

I went back and checked and the contacts are there. Email and folders are gone. I could *maybe* understand clearing the inbox, but when I've already put them aside in folders it is clear that I want them. I had intentions of paying a subscription eventually and downloading it all with POP service (which MS makes you pay for vs. free with Gmail).

I suggest you just email them and find out whats up and whether it can be restored. My guess is that it can

    Print it ?

Export it to your HD, burn it to a CD or USB drive once in awhile.

    And go with GMail.
