I've been anticipating arrival of the Hotwheels Magnum PI 308 Star Series (part # P9908) to come out and I finally got it today. I thought I'd post my thoughts and a few pics in case anyone else is thinking about it.

Overall, I think the model is very nice. The detail is very good (no, not BBR level) but I was quite pleased with the overall look, dimensions and quality.

I'm glad I got it, but what I find most interesting it how the designers of this model mixed up features between all the different 308 variants. It almost like someone went out of their way to include features from the Euro, US, Carb, Injected, QV, and GTB versions.

To illustrate, here are the details that caught my eye:
    1) The front hood has QV louvers that are painted body color instead of black. Fine if this were a Euro model, but too many other features makes this look like a US version, for example it has US bumper lights and side light indicators, US front spoiler, US exhaust shield, US "flag" mirror and center louvers across the rear deck lid.

    2) Speaking of the "flag" mirror, it’s only on the driver's side. Fine if this were in '82 model year but if there were a US QV, it would have mirrors on both sides.

    3) On the inside, it has a center counsel glove box only found on GTBs.

    4) Steering wheel is the QV Momo style, but the center section is painted silver like on the Carb models.

    5) There are gauges between the door and steering column, again only found on Carb models.

    6) Engine is modeled after an injected 2V engine with black plenum, fine except rear emblems say "GTS" with no "i", so wrong badges on the rear and on the interior fuse box cover.

That's about what I found, I'm sure there are others "mistakes". Hard to figure out what they based this model on, probably closest to an ’82 GTSi. Like I said, I'm happy with it and I’m glad there is a model somewhat close to my real ’84 US 308 QV, but it would be nice if the designers had done a little more research before this went into production.

    Enjoy!

For a minute while I was looking at the pictures I thought it was certainly made by KYOSHO! Is this really from Hotwheels? Wow..! Hotwheels are doing pop-up headlights now? This must be a super elite version. This is the very first time I've seen a 1:18 die cast car from Hotwheels with a pop-up headlights. Man, what is going on with Hotwheels? Did they change management or something? Overall, this model looks very good for a Hotwheels.

I got it off ebay for $85..if you search "1/18 Ferrari 308", you'll see them...I had to wait for it from some seller in Hong Kong, but it showed up safe and sound.

Hotwheels really stepped up on this one (or at least they found a good supplier to make it under their name) I have a few Lamborghini Kyosho models and I think it's on par with those.

There was an earlier question on how this compares to the 1/18 Kyosho 308's...sorry I never picked up one the Kyosho 308's so I can't compare if molds are the same or not....Best Regards....

That looks quite odd, with a single 'late' flag mirror, and you have a sharp eye the under dash 'oil temp/clock' was long gone before Magnum PI!!!

Shouldn't the QV have extra lights in the grill? I think it's based on a Kyosho BTW, allthough there seem some small detail differences.
