Going to be In Houston for a wedding in July. Will be on my way home from Kentucky with my wife and kiddos. Looking for hotel suggestions, along with a shooting range, lol. I heard there's a nice aquarium in Houston and would like accomodations near there. I hadn't looked up the name, It was word of mouth from friend. Also thoughts of a shooting range with 500-800 yrd that will allow me to shoot my 50cal rifle.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Not looking for a Motel 8. Really appreciate any insight or Info! Looking any car events as well as my kiddos love'em.

I lived in Houston for 10 years and moved away 3 years ago. When I go back for work, I stay at hotel Zaza. Check out their website and see if it fits your style. It is right by the natural science museum and close to downtown. The museum of natural science is great for kids and the butterfly exhibit is fun. You can stroll through the Rice University campus which is gorgeous and the children's museum is close too.

For shooting ranges, I have been to several, but don't really shoot long range. A good range is American shooting center on the west side of town, but I looked and 300 yds max.

ZaZa is a very nice place. I would have no problem recommending it. It's not close to the aquarium but you're really going to have to get a taxi to go anywhere in Houston anyway. It's probably about a 15 minute taxi ride from ZaZa. Make sure to get the number for a taxi service, you can't just hail a taxi in Houston, you have to call them.

You might see a few Ferraris at ZaZa. It's a see and be seen kind of place.

The aquarium is downtown. It's owned by the Landry's restaraunt chain.

Chance of seeing an Fcar, sounds good to me, lol.....I'm from San Antonio, so I'm not spoiled with taxi hailing. It'll be me, my wife, and my two kiddos(4 and 3 years old). I'll have to look into their parking, if garage only, I won't fit with my lifted Tundra....I am Texan afterall, lol. My police lights on top are usually what kills it. Looking at the sight, that ZaZa looks nice. I'll give them a call to see if they're gun friendly, regarding storing my rifle. A few other places had done It for me,don't feel comfortable leaving it in the room.

I promise not to be "that guy" with the crazy kids or pull up looking like the Clampets go to Maui, lol.

Not a fan of Taxis, but I'll look at the route from the hotel to see how bad the commute to the aquarium is, mainly because of dealing with carseat and such.

    Thanks again for the suggestions!

+1 on ZaZa, I have met sports guys there that were travelling thru.
    Probably can handle the firearms...:D :D :D

That is a Fertitta restaurant you are looking at, a chain..there's another one in Clear lake on the channel...Moody Gardens has an actual real aquarium (ice!, cute penguins!!) and might be more entertainment for the family, a private white sand beach and bar, etc. etc.

Give a shout out closer to arrival if I can help in any way.....

ZaZa is right across the street from the Natural History Museum, Butterfly House, etc. and Hermann Park with our zoo.

Pool Terrace there has Cabana suites, that include an outdoor living room on the balconey.

What part of town is the wedding in? That can help narrow things down.

I just stayed at Hotel Derek for a wedding. The beds were very comfortable, but the pocket doors for the bathroom were rather peculiar.

As for a shooting range, depending on where your at, this one is very popular by my neck of the woods in Cypress.

Really? The one just off of 45 was the worst aquarium if been to. Sucked bad. I felt remorse that I took out of town guests down there. IMHO - there are better ways to spend time and money in this city. If you're doing Za Za. put on some shoes and walk around. If your intent on fish, go to Moody Gardens as suggested earlier. Your kids will appreciate it. So will you.

I have not been to the downtown one, the one in Clear Lake was awesome when first opened, and you can watch the boats go to Clear Lake copmeing home off Galveston Bay.

Moody Gardens is back to 100% operational.
Took a big hit in Ike....we saved most of the penguins!

    Chad,
There are plenty of nice hotels on my side of town and I also live less than a mile from an outdoor gun range. I can always put you and the family up for a day or two and in 10mins we can be at the range, http://www.amshootcenters.com/.

Also depending upon the date remember my b-day is the 4th of July and the C&C event is that saturday on the 7th. Let me know if I can help in anyway but we gotta atleast meet up for lunch or dinner or barbq at my house.

Oh I forgot to add that since you live in SA and will most likely be taking I-10 back I live 3 miles south of I-10 off of Hwy 6 so you have no excuse to atleast stop by the house for a few minutes, consider it a piss stop lol! I'll set you guys up with rations for the last 3hr's of your journey, cookies for the kids cold beverages for you and your boss.

You have my number so keep intouch.

The museum next to Zaza was interesting. I watched a cool IMAX movie on time travel that blew my mind. I'm sure your kids would like looking at all of the animal displays and interacting with some science stuff.

The park next to the amphitheater/hotel/museum had a train going around that I'm sure the kids would love.

Also Risi is just down the highway about 8 miles if you need to get your dose of Ferrari.

I wish I could help with gun ranges but I'm not from there and don't know of any that accommodate 500-800 yards. The one near me (Dallas) has 100 at most I think.
Do you mind posting any pics of the 50? I like that gun and I hope to shoot one someday.

Thanks BigTex! We'll be VIN houston the morning prior to the wedding, thats when we'll be playing tourist. I'll look up that Moody Gardens one as well when I get off duty today. For the hotel, ZaZa does sound nice. We plan on being in Houston for two nights, so far, ZaZa sounds like the place. I haventcalled yet In regards to storage for my selected propertt, but will do so shortly.

I'll be honest, I don't have the invitation in front of me, so I can't say off the top of my head exactly where it is. But, we're not afraid to drive around.
Thanks fkr the range info. I don't kind if It's only a 100-300yrd setup, my wife just wants to be able to go out and shoot it if we had time. But, kids first. Just figured is throw it out there, didn't know if some FChatters here were shooters as well. some ranges won't let a 50 out without prior "qualifying" or arrangements.

Thanks Gregg! We'll probably end up with the hotel just because we'll be in and out so often. I'll look up that range as well, along as definitely calling you to try and Hookup for chow.

Thanks! That museum is sounding lore and more interesting, along with Moody Gardens. I may be up in the Dallas area in October for a recertification on my Krav Maga Instructor Cert. If I make it up there, I'll bring the rifle and we'll find a place to shoot off some rounds! I love shooting and sharing, lol.

Definitely get back with us with the area the wedding is, and where you end up staying and planning on venturing out to. That way we can also help give you an idea of travel times. Google may say it'll take 25 minutes, but we know if theres construction going on.:D

shooting is fun! Group shoot in October? I'm sure Rob would join us.

I did the museum and although I wasn't thrilled by it, they did have some interesting exhibits like the stuffed animals and all the science stuff. The rest wasn't to my liking but that's just me. Try to see am IMAX. I'm sure they would have one that kids would understand.
