We am currently looking to relocate to Houston. Oddly enough, we have never visited. But, we are adventurers and Houston is the point of interest as of now...Having never been, I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice as to neighborhoods great for families, and if there are any contacts for the job market there. As of right now, hubby is the one actively looking for employment as I am currently with child and will not need to look until after the baby arrives. Any information would be of great help!

Hope everyone fared well through the storm!

    Best-
    heather

Hi Heather. A lot depends on price range. What type of home you're looking for, etc.

I've lived in Houston my entire life (almost 27 years). I grew up in a neighborhood called Jersey Village. It's an older neighborhood, although there are newere homes being built as well as 2 or 3 new sections for more upscale homes. It acts as it's own city. With it's own mayor, police and fire station. Elementary and High School inside the 'hood itself.

Fairfield, which is farther north is nice. I know a few people that live out there and love it and love their neighbors.

Unfortunately traffic from that part of Houston's outskirts (NW Harris county) into Downtown can be troublesome, especially in the afternoon to get home.

Closer in though, there are really nice neighborhoods. Bellaire and Memorial are two areas that are close to town and more upscale.

Minds sort of out of it today. So I can't think of many more right now.

Guess I'll wish yall an early Welcome to Houston!

Heather, just curious, why the relocation? Getting bored with FL? lol

as for job opportunities, what kind of position is your husband looking for? i know several good recruiters in the accounting/finance area

as for neighborhoods, there are LOTS of good ones and i would wait to see where the job opportunity is before making a decision on housing. Houston is a HUGE spread out city. you wouldnt want to wind up with a job all the way accross town from where you live. any specific questions you have, feel free to PM me

    thank you for your input.

Im only allowing for 300K and under since we will be new to the area and I also want a place that doesnt require too much upkeep.
Also, compared to the homes here in FL, I am impressed by what i have seen in comparison in TX. and in that price range, I think we are looking at plenty for what we require. haha

VERY BORED!!! i grew up here and after the arrival of our 2nd child, our family will be complete and i am in desperate need of a change! Orlando is NOT a "city" in my book so im excited to explore a real city! :)

    As for hubbys employment....
He is a former deputy sheriff of 9 years, got out to open his own car shop which we sold after child #1 came along.
He went into the hospitality industry as a Loss Prevention supervisor.
Now, he is a regional branch manager in sales and oversees building cleanings (windows etc)
He is great in sales and management and he is also interested in entertaining the idea of getting back into the law enforcement field.

Any help that can be offered is very much appreciated.

We are planning to take a trip out sometime soon to look around and get a better feel for what we are getting into! :)

You can get a lot of house for $300K.

Let us know when you and your husband will be in town. Maybe we can work out some sort of FChat meet.

Take a look at Black Horse Ranch, or Brideland. Those are close to Fairfield off of 290.

Is Brideland the newer area a little farther up from BHR on the same side of 290? I like BHR, been to a party there, really nice neighborhood.

He misstyped "Bridgeland" but yes it's south of BHR....LOL!

I'd say to avoid total culture shock, you go with Clear Lake to the south, (boats and water) anything above the current flood water line should be fine!

Come on over we'll show you all around, it'll take some time to familiarize yourself with all the various "lifestyles" Houston has to offer...there is pretty nice house values here compared to values nationwide..

I saw this post and had to bounce on it for my first post. If your looking for a growing community The Woodlands is a nice place check it out about 30 minutes from downtown.

30 MILES from downtown actual results may vary....LOL!

You'll find that's the trouble, commutes can get unreal peak times...but if he lands with HPD a friend of mine is Engineer on a downtown residential high rise tower. You could lease there while you check things out.

I live in the Heights which is older inner city but can get OUT of town in the AM to the Woodlands or Sugarland in a pretty quick trip, the other incoming side of the major highways are gridlock!
