If Rita hits Houston...damn I hate to think out it.

    http://www.click2houston.com/news/4995195/detail.html

HOUSTON -- Houston city leaders hope to help Katrina evacuees avoid another hit, but the plan to empty the city's largest shelters days before Rita is scheduled to come ashore is not sitting well with everyone, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

Officials with the City of Houston said they would put evacuees still living in the city's two largest shelters, Reliant Arena and the George R. Brown Convention Center, on planes or buses to Fort Chaffee, Ark.

Storm survivors will be offered the same services in Arkansas that they have received in Houston over the past three weeks.

The city said it is all about safety, because those shelters might not hold up in a hurricane.

However, some evacuees said they were caught off guard and feel like they are being pushed out.

"I feel like they could have at least given us until Friday like they said they were. This was so sudden," an evacuee told KPRC Local 2.

"What choice do you have, you know? I don't have a choice," evacuee Keith Phillips said.

"I'm not taking a chance like I did in New Orleans. I stood on the roof for four days and four nights. I'm not taking that chance again," evacuee Wilson Morrison said.

The city hopes to have the two shelters completely empty by Tuesday night.

Shelter organizers said evacuees would be flown or bussed to Fort Chaffee.

Seems like a good excuse to get the evacuees that haven't bothered to find jobs or a place to live out of Texas.

We have a number of evacuee children enrolled in our district. We also have been able to employ one mother in our department. Conversation with the mother was interesting - basically they are starting their lives over and very much appreciate the way they've been treated in our small community. They now have an apartment, both parents are employed and their children are doing well in school. Guess they are among the fortunate.

Thanks for posting the weather map - looks like we might be riding the Waco Wild West ride Saturday wearing ponchos. Thought about riding the road bike but think the crossover is more appropriate tread/tire-wise (the mountain bikes might be even better).

Remember last time we had one on that course? A Cat5? Gilbert. Or should I say Gilberto.

Man, I hope this one does that same thing.

For some really good weather maps, satellite photos and projected tracks, go to www.palaciosbeacon.com. This is the online newspaper of Palacios, Texas, which is directly on target for a direct hit by Rita. Palacios sits on Matagorda Bay. This small town suffered through the worst that Carla could dish out in 1961 and was almost entirely leveled and rebuilt.

When you get to their home page, look to the left and click on the Hurricane Rita button. All of their alerts for their area are listed also, including the "Mandatory" evacuation beginning at 6pm this evening...............

Hopefully the 3 weeks of Katrina news coverage will result in fewer heros trying to ride out the storm.

    Hopefully.

...and I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance. ;)

The crazy right wing bible beaters claimed San Francisco earthquakes, NYC attacks, and New Orleans hurricane on God punishing sinners, what will they claim for a Texas hurricane? Catholic Mexicans, oil companies, or JR(dual meaning)? :D

Luckily we have mandatory evacuation laws.........I was down by Galveston Bay last night picking up a few momentos at Mom's place.......

    This one gonna slam us.........

Have emergency repair materials on hand.....

"If I had a hammer, I'd hammer Saturday morning....."

I'd hammer on the roof.....as the trailer home next door flies to pieces!
Tie the other end of this rope to that oak tree there, would ya?

Gotta finish these sand bags, and get the generator set up!
I'm gonna lift it into the attic and route the exhaust out an existing vent stack.......Val's not happy with the hole in the ceiling though.
Once it's up there, I'll rerock it.....

*stringing power cords, to the cottage out back..*..

Luckily shotgun shells were on sale! LOL! Martial Law on my street, sponsored by Academy......

You could have fooled me with the way some people are acting....The cops were called to Sams because 2 black guys were threatening an old white lady about stealing the water she just bought. The some other brothas grabbed boxes water off some ladies cart in the parking lot. Just loaded their car up and drove off with La plates:rolleyes:

Then another lady bought a $1000 D&B purse on her FEMA card right in front of me...I asked her if she was suppose to be buying a $1000 purse with that money and she said she could spend it on anything she wanted. I told he she should buy food and she replied"they won't let us starve".

Be safe, and take care of ol' Speedy!
She should have to eat that 1000 dollar purse. No ketchup.

My friend works for HPD and had a few stories for me. He said once they got their FEMA cards, they cleaned out the Fiesta liquor store by the dome and were checking into the Astrodome Hilton. He also said they started showing up back inside the dome with new FUBU, Sean John and Fat Albert clothes, remote control cars, electronics of all sorts.

He said he went on a call the other day where a guy had taken in a refugee family. The guy had come home from work and they had sliced up his couch with a knife, stole all of his electronics then split.

My daughter left Houston near downtown at 4:00 pm. Took her 3 hours to get to Katy, 5 hours to go 100 miles and 6 hours to Austin. Boyfriend leaves this morning at 5:00 am and I bet it takes him 10 hours. Got the boat and waverunners out of the lake at Marble Falls preparing for the Colorado River to flood again.
