OK, by the book---------I replaced the sodium valves with SS and started to re-assemble the motor. 1-4 bank (rear) ---- lined up the marks on the front bearing cap and locked the cams in place with maple split blocks and set the flywheel marks to the 1-4 TDC mark and installed the head and belt and set the tension. All is well and rotated the crank a few revs and all is smooth. Repeat same procedure for the 5-8 (front) marks on cap match the cam and secured with split block and set the timing mark on flywheel to 5-8 TDC. tried to rotate crank and it will not turn 360 , #8 EX valve gets friendly with piston. I turned the lights off and took a shower------------------------- medicinal valium taken and now I appeal to community for HELP!!!
OK ----------------I can't imagine what I am missing but there must be a simple answer and I'm sure I will find it here!! still lost

Did you verify that the first bank of cams was still at TDC ???

for each rotation of the cams, the crankshaft rotates twice...there are two TDCs on the crank and only one TDC for a camshaft, be sure that you have the "correct" tdc on the crank when you line up the cams.

You also have to be sure the distributors are clocked correctly.

For the front bank, you still have your fly wheel at TDC 1-4.

What he said, I believe all cams are set on the 1-4 timing mark.

    And this is the problem....
All cams are set with the Number 1 cylinder set at TDC compression, with timing marks set at PM 1/4.

    Solution:

    Remove 5-8 cams
Set engine to TDC compression, with timing marks set at PM 1/4 (Timing marks on 1/4 should be at/near the cam cap scribes)
Do not turn the engine over
Install 5-8 cams, Timing marks on 5/8 should be at/near the cam cap scribes)
