Oh, and by the way, I've always liked that picture of your car. Kind of looks like the sedate country estate. :)

On a 412 the "fog" lights actually do not work as such (at least on European cars), they take care of high beam and can not be used as fog lights.

If i remember correct on a 400 they can be switched on as fog lights. Not certain any more. Often 400's are shown with all lights switched on. 412 rarelybever are pictured like that as you need a helper to do that.

The only way i can switch mine on is by using the signal function on the indicator stalk (412), the lamp itself is not build like a foglamp either (focussed beam rather than wide spread light).

The 412 pictured is showing original setup. I would be surprised if you can switch them on rather then use them to flash only.

I thought that on 400's the lights are behind the grill, rather than like a 412 where they are next to it.
when i asked years ago the change was explained as a "cleaning issue", as it is very difficult to clean them.

So I would think the 400 was later converted to a 412 grill? Makes any sense or am I way off?

Different countries had different setups. It all depends on where the car was originally sold. Some 400's had the ability to turn on the lights, some were just "flashers", some were both. Some cars had clear lens while a few had yellow lens from the factory.

We only had a few inches here, but lots of tree damage. We've been cheated out of Fall, and a month to get the yard tidied up! With any luck that will be the last snow for a while - its not that I don't like snow, it’s the timing that was wrong!

Yellow was country specific in the past. France required yellow even on regular driving lights.
    Some countries allowed a choice.

Obviously you could hook them up to the highbeams on the lift up high beams. I think this is illegal but has anyone done this? Would be a lott of extra light.
(interresting although it would need to be reverseable as it would fail yearly type approval).

On page 55,70 and 76 of Automobilia's book on the 412 the car is shown with covers on the high beam. Branded cibie. On page 67 the cr is shown (detail) with yellow lights. On page 56/57 it documents that LHD had "daylight flashing" while RHD have "fog lights". That clearly suggest a switch. Interresting the car shown with yellow lights is actually LHD.

On page 19 a 400 is shown with the driving lights exposed where on page 314 Ferrari by Pininfarina the lights are behind a grill with one picture showing rectangle lights but on the location of the round ones of a 365.

Would be interresting to see whether this changed over time or random, by country.

Does anyone have the Cibie covers. I remember having such covers in the 80's on fog lights (although those where not attached to a Ferrari)?

Series 1 400's had the lights behind the grille. Series 2 400's had grille cut-outs.

We had 4 inches of snow here in Fairfield County but the real problem was that all of the trees still have their leaves and so the heavy wet snow was too much weight and lots of tree branches came down all over the state. More than 750,000 homes in CT were without power at the peak and there still were 650,000 reported without this morning.

We lost power for 48 hours and it was COLD without heat! We have lived in this town for 23 years and never lost power for more than an hour or so in the first 19 years. In the past four years we have lost power for 6 days, 4 1/2 days, 3 1/2 days and now 2 days. The last two were in the past two months, with Irene and now this Nor'easter. At least it was summer time during Irene and we could cook out, sleep easy and go to the beach even though the power was out.

Of course, if I buy a generator this will be the last time that we ever lose power!

I am glad that I got my 90 minute drive in on Saturday morning before the storm hit. It doesn't look as though much, if any, salt was put down in this part of the state, but I'll wait until after the next rain storm before going out again.

PS My "driving" lights are flash to pass style lights.

I'm sure there will be others interested in these pictures of my 365 engine - I'm just beginning a complete rebuild, I think you can see the main issue already. The good news is there's no sign of any water in the oil and no debris in the sump - but it did only run on 11 cylinders...
More pics as I progress if anybody's interested!

    Howard.

PS On a lighter note I have stripped and bead blasted all four brake calipers, and had the parts zinc chromated - they look better!

    Howard,
I am intrigued that you had to remove the LH door pannel to get the engine out - thought it might be easier to remove the bonnet.......
And the starter motor to the rear of the engine (on the floor) seems a tad heavy even for a 365!!
Have fun and yes please start a new thread to keep us informed of progress.

My fog/driving lights do not work at all in a dark garage.
I think its great that they have "personality" but how do I track down whatever is supposed to turn them on?

Turning driving lights on in a 412 - pull indicator stalk towards you.
Can not switch them on permanently.

    Hope that helps, Peter
