How can I justify a second Ferrari to my wife.

Three years one and all is well. The 308 is just "the red car" in the garage. It's been a great car to own and enjoy.

Along with the 308 and the Countach, the Testarossa was the third pinup car of my youth. I've been looking for one on and off for a while. Now one has come up. I don't know if it is the one. I would need to fly to inspect it. But on paper, it ticks most of the boxes. Being a RHD country, pickings are a lot slimmer than for LHD. Good ones don't come up for sale often here in Australia.

So, fellow multi-Ferrari owning enthusiasts, how would you justify a fabulous but totally unnecessary second sports car purchase to your practical, frugal, wonderful wife of 25 years? Financially, it will make no material difference to our lives or our ability to be able to support our adult children, who are still in the throws of university studies. The only thing my wife has been on my case about over the last few years was my health, which she was right, I neglected. I took that one by the horns last year and now that is completely under control. Life is good. We really have little to complain or worry about. I even went out and bought a factory close to the house to store any more "acquisitions". Which my wife actually approved of because it had a bedroom and a shower that she joked, "I can send you to when you misbehave." So, how should I present the Testarossa idea in a way that might be a little more digestible than the 308, that just one day appeared in the garage?

One needs a 12-cylinder car - that's a fact.

 

Just buy it,back to the bat cave and keep stum.Simple..sort of.

 

I had an F8 Spider on order and bought an F12 to drive while I waited the almost 2 years. First Ferrari. After it was built and on the water, I asked my wife if she would mind parking in the driveway during summer, as we have a 2 car garage. Her response, “Why ?” I told her I didn’t want to trade the F12, and she said OK. Now I have my sights on the new V12 to be unveiled next Thursday, but will for sure then trade in the F12. Unless of course I hit the lottery before then.

 

Tell her you’re considering getting a second woman… or a second car…

Divorce the wife .... buy what you want!

 

buy it first.
then suggest it as a possibilty.
then when she says ok, show her the car.

rinse and repeat.

 

Oh that's a classic.

 

From what you write, this car won't have any negative impact on you or her. Just buy the thing. Worst case, you sell it for the same or similar in a year.

Just remember that there will be *something* shiny she will want. Make sure she gets it.

 

Oh yes, I have thought about that. All she's ever nudged me for is an e-bike. 25% of an engine out cam belt change!

 

When I told my wife I wanted another Ferrari she said...........I don't care how many Ferrari's you own as long as you pay for them yourself, and it doesn't affect my lifestyle. Soon there were three!!!!!

 

Standard rationalization for buying a Ferrari:

1. Do you want it?

2. Can you afford it?

Done deal.

 

You already answered it in your post— “it will make zero financial difference in your lives” - and it will make you happy.. so if both those are true, I don’t see a single reason why she wouldn’t encourage you to do it… no convincing required if she loves you and finances aren’t compromised.

How to present the possible purchase of a car to your wife? First, if the purchase price is not a level you typically discuss between you before making the purchase, then the amount of money involved does not matter. If the purchase price is at a level you typically discuss, then discussion before purchase decision is wise.

I always tell my wife when an additional car is getting my interest, independent of cost. I try to tell her early enough that the focus and passion of the hunt has not really begun. That is one way of making sure she knows what is in my heart. I can't recall her ever being against a car purchase I wished to make. And she never even drives any of my toys. Transparency and inclusion have been important elements of our mutual trust, much more important than a car.

 

Mrs. Rosso went out and bought a beach condo without saying a word about it to me.









But she did it a couple of years before we met, so I’ll give her a pass on that one.

Bought my current Ferrari without telling the wife. Had to act fast to get it before a dealer got it, long story.
Wife was not happy but it was my money.
Told a workmate I bought a Ferrari without telling her and now she's not talking to me. He said Win Win!

 

Aside from some of the other replies that make sense from a financial point of view - it will have no effect on any of my family - I do like your approach. I have always viewed our marriage as a partnership. We've been together for 30 years, 25 of them in marriage. She's rounded off a few of my rough edges, calling me a "work in progress". She's a great girl. And she gets that boys do like their toys. So I think after some eyeball rolling, walking off with her hands in the air, that the dust will settle. Maybe the acquisition needs to be followed shortly thereafter by a weekend getaway to wine country and a nice hotel stay. In the meantime, I always find some of the replies to such a question hysterical. It seems I am not the only forum contributor who has broached this issue.

 

How tall are you Simon? If you are 6'1" or taller, I would not even consider the TR...very little head and leg room for a taller driver.

As far as selling your wife on the idea, tell her that it is a long-time dream of yours to own a TR (I'm sure she already knows that) and that the depreciation on the car will be little to none over the next several years - assuming you purchase one that is up to date on maintenance. This is not like buying a new Mercedes where you get killed in terms of depreciation in the first few years. A TR (or other similar used sports car or supercar) is a true asset purchase...at least that's what I tell my wife.

 

I am 6'1" on a good day.

My mechanic tells me he's almost never seen a TR that is up to date on maintenance. But then again, he's a perfectionist. I'm looking for the best example I can find with solid service records, then budgeting AUD$25-50k to recommission it. Most of them sit for years without proper annual maintenance. Low kms, although great in one respect, often means less periodic maintenance.
