Press the power button twice, hold it in on the third push and depress the tuner, then recycle the power by turning the vehicle off.

Not to hijack the thread completely, but I have to vent:

A while back, going over a bump in the 328, the ancient Alpine launched the CD into the cabin. I went looking for a solid state option.

I looked at the Empeg Car, but passed, since it still used a notebook disk drive ... hit a bump during a disk access, and you can still be out of luck.

But now when you can boot Linux on a PC from a USB flash stick, I figured to look again: with dozens of computers in the average new car, credit card sized personal mp3 players, and cell phones playing music, you should be able to get a solid state car stereo that uses flash memory instead of moving parts.

    Apparently not.

The Empeg is gone. The MPAA declared it a "pirate tool". The only 1-DIN in-dash computers being made are from mainland China, where the MPAA lawyers can't get at the mfrs.

About the only option is to plug your iPod into your car stereo -- which raises its own g-loading issues. (And most car stereos require aftermarket mods even for this.)

Apparently, the record industry has decided to "protect" their obsolete business by trying to block public access to *ANY* technology past the wax record era.

In an era when the people "can't be trusted" with technology, any wonder that there's a lot of unused and undocumented capabilities in today's products? Take control from the people or get witch-hunted by the lawyers.

    Gah.

I wonder what part of displaying song titles would be considered a "copyright violation" by MPAA.

At this rate, in about five years, actually listening to a CD will be considered a violation.
(But by then, the only reason to buy a CD from the record industry will be for the porn-lite cover art, anyway. The "music" won't be worth bothering with.)
(The stupid part is that it's getting hard to buy foreign originated music in any format *other* than an mp3 download.)

Okay, we now return you to your regularly scheduled "how-tos".

It looks like the one no moving parts option is the cheap one: http://www.epinions.com/Virtual_Reality_Sound_VR3_CD_Player_w_USB_and_Scan_Disk_Inputs_1/display_~reviews
I hear the 500 is a better quality unit, but with a weirder button layout.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/VRCD500SDU-Car-Radio-USB-slot/dp/B000GPP586

Nextar in canada also has a unit, but without the powered USB interface.

I gather the SNr isn't all that good on the VR3 units, and that the tuner isn't that good, either. But none of the main players want to touch the newer technology. I guess these features don't raise the prices enough.

These days, when you look into putting a computer in the dash, everybody starts talking about the fold-out VGA displays. Who watches DVDs while driving?

Back to the original question of title/artist info from CDs:
Not all CDs have that information on the CD: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-Text
While another approach uses a "disk id" that your hardware has to lookup on the internet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDDB
