I believe it was with the F512 M that Ferrari said Ferrari model names would bear the letter 'F'. The F355 came in - but it was only the 'F355' if it was a manual. When the F1 came, it went to 355 F1. Then there was the F50. Then the 360. Then Ferrari went back to the F with the F430 - but dropped the F with the 430 Scuderia.

There's no rhyme or reason to it. Ferrari's only consistency is their inconsistency. Gotta love it. :)

I'm a bit confused. When Ferrari first press releases came out of the 458, didn't it show F458 Italia and not just 458 Italia?

Actually this is a really good question which someone should pose to Piero one day. I've been to a few events where he's been a guest speaker and I'd love to ask him this question. There has to be a reason behind the choice designation. I doubt that it's arbitrary where they're deciding if the "F" sounds good or bad in front of the model designation! ")

    Let's see:

    F40 (1987)
    F92A (1992 F1 car)
    F93A (1993 F1 car)
    F33SP (1993 American IMSA car)
F512M (1994 best, rarest, and last rendition of late model TR)
F355 (1994 according to Jeremy Clarkson: "The best car in the world, ever!")
    F50 (1995)
    F310 B (1997 F1 car)
    F300 (1998 F1 car)
    F399 (1999 F1 car)
    F2001 (2001 F1 car)
    F2003-GA (2003 F1 car)
    F2004 (2004 F1 car)
    F430 (2004)
    F430 Spider (2005)
    F2005 (2005 F1 car)
    F60 (2009 F1 car)

Most F designated cars appear to be pure racing cars, with exception of F40, F512M, F355, F50, F430, F430 Spider, hum?

    It's simple:

F-ing Badass Cars! Some of the best of the breed!

Is it possible it could of started due to copy write ownership of the designated numbers?

For example, i remember reading that Porsche originally wanted to name the 911, the 901. But due to Peugeot having ownership of all three digit car names / numbers with a "0" in the middle, Porsche had to change to 911..

Maybe Ferrari came across a similar thing, and added an F to get around the copy write?
