Did the movie start the myth? Was the myth there even before the movie was produced?

No concrete information, but there are some speculations

1.) the Pope and the King of England ordered the death of the Knights Templar and crucified the leader on Friday, October 13th, 1307.

2.) Some say the number 13 was purposely vilified by the priests of patriarchal religions because it represented femininity. Thirteen corresponded to the number of lunar (menstrual) cycles in a year, and the number was revered in prehistoric goddess-worshipping cultures(does leave some speculative theories for DaVinci Code theorists). (cut-n-paste)

3.) Scandanavians and Hindu's believed it was unlucky for 13 people to gather in the same place (so explain why there were 13 in "The 13th Warrior", if Scandanavians thought it so unlucky)

4.) historical legends that the number 13 indicates evil or is just unlucky, which is why several buildings built earlier in the 1900's had nothing on the 13th floor, it was just an empty floor.

I have read it was because of the dissolution of the Order of the Temple, or the Knights Templar. The were Knights who closely followed Benedictine Monk order rules and established themselves as protectors of religious pilgrims in the holy land. They had become powerful bankers and held vast treasure troves from England to Jersulem, and had become "Over Mighty Subjects" of lords both temporal and spiritual. Philip the Fair of France conspired with the Pope Clement V to bring down the order and it leader Jacques de Molay and lay claim to their lands and money. France needed funds to successfully prosecute wars with England over their continental domains, and the Papacy was in need of landed wealth to recover from the Papal schism recently resolved. Clement issued a Papal Bull charging the Templars with heresy. On Friday, October 13, 1307, in a highly co-ordinated effort Templars were arrested and condemned to death far and wide across Europe on that same day. Jacques de Molay cursed all those involved in the perpetration of this most heinous crime as he was burned at the stake.

Also Friday is the sixth day of the week, and six is an unlucky number.
There are 13 lunar (menstrual) cycles per year, so medieval and renaissance priests perpetuated this myth as an unlucky day because witches gathered and held Sabbat on Friday.

Friday the 13th isn't a myth, it really happens, mostly after Thursday the 12th.

Right on the money! :) I find KT history absolutely fascinating. Although it's traditionally believed that ALL of the arrested Knights Templar were executed it's now believed that only a small portion were killed, but within that group did include Jaques de Molay. New evidence believes that a majority of the KT members weren't actually killed, but released back into society. A letter from King Phillip was supposedly found not long ago (I believe in the Vatican library) which pardoned the Knights Templar of the crimes they were initially accused of. Very interesting history indeed...for those that are interested anyway :)
