I had to finally move some boxes from storage into the condo with my girlfriend (I'm sure much to her dismay).

One of the boxes contained some modeling, one complete and two others incomplete. So I have a couple of questions.

The completed model is of the McLaren (Tamia) MP4/8. The problem is I'd clear coated the paint and decals which has now begun to yellow. Is there any way to fix this? I've thought about waxing the paint or wet sanding it. But, I'm not sure that'll solve the problem. Any suggestions?

The other model is a Porsche 935 that'd I've had for years and years, ok over 25 now and I'd never completed due to two issues. One I'm missing an integral piece, the top wing element, and two the orange paint came out terribly and I need to strip it. So, where could I find an odd ball piece and what’s the best way to strip the paint of the body without damaging the plastic? Also I'm assuming the decals would probably be too old to use. Is that correct or should I try them anyway when I eventually get to finish it.

    Thanks for the help.

I would try using a very fine sand paper and wet sanding the clear coat to see if the yellow will come out. If you put enough layers of clear you shouldn't have any problems with sanding off the decals. As for the already painted model sandpaper will be your best option as well just be sure not to sand through any of the pieces or make them too thin. As for the decals, I have no idea if they will be usable I've never tried building a model that has been sitting in a box for years.

Your best bet on the piece is just to scratch build a new one.

Charles: regarding the both models, I would take the body parts that you want stripped and do the following: Take an old plastic basin or someting deep enough to hold the body parts and go to your local automotive parts store and get some of the cheap purple cleaner stuff that they have. Put the parts to be stripped in the basin and pour the cleaner on the parts until they are completely immersed. Wrap the top of the basin with plastic wrap or something to keep pets, etc out of it and set it aside for a week. Next week or whenever you get to it, take it to a sink and, and wearing rubber gloves, use an old toopthbrush to scub off the now slimy old paint. It should fall right off the parts. Use an old x-acto knife to get the crap out of the fine lines and wash the parts off with soap and water. You can get new decals at 2 places I know of:

If you do the entire body, then repaint it with Tamiya spray paints and clear coat since the Tamiya clearcoat has not yellowed on me yet. As for the orange porsche, I assume it is the 1/12 scale Jagermeister 934 RSR (correct me if I'm wrong). You should be able to find an old beat up one on eBay and buy it to salvage the model, or you could call Norm at F1 Specialties. I would also try calling Tamiya USA at 1-800-826-4922 since they do carry spare parts for their plastic model kits and the 934 was reissued a few years ago. They might still have the whale tail part you seek.

You did not say what kind of paint is on the 935, (or I maybe missed it) but there are several products available in the model railroad area that could be usable.

I think I have an old Model Railroader magazine that has a paint stripping article - maybe I can find it this weekend.

I seem to remember it said to be really careful with chemical strippers because they can leach out the plasticizer from the body shell and leave you with a fragile crumbling powder mess...

Will see if I can find it...James
