You proboably already know this, but you can restore it from your recycle bin, if you've cleaned that out, ?

There are low level file recovery tools. It all depends on how large the file is in question, how long you have been without the file, and how much data is currently being written to the drive itself. If you are trying to recover a file, which is gone from the recycle bin, then stop right now. Do all your work and research on another computer, not the one you are trying to recover the file from. Otherwise, data can, and will be written onto the place where the file is. And I do say 'is' for a reason - because it is most likely still there.

Do a search for file recovery - on another pc please. And you'll see some trial applications, some other ones that are costly, and some that will allow you to recover one file up to a certain size.

For file recovery, I've found a very good tool to be PC Inspector File Recovery. It is freeware and works pretty well.

I can't get the PC Inspector File Recovery system to work. I scan the logical drive and my floppy drive buzzes, then nothing. I then double click the "c" drive and the screen freezes.
    Any tips?

besides patience, not really. I'm unsure how that particular utility works, but others... they can take hours to scan the drive, because it is a low level scan. Once that is done, then you will choose which file you wish to recover.

The scan took a hour and did not produce any items.

You could do a system restore, if you made a backup point recently. That will basically recreate your system as it was on the day the backup was made. I am pretty sure that XP automatically makes a point everytime you install a program, but check it out.

Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore (should be the last one)

nada. that isnt' the same thing. a system restore does not bring back data, it only restores system files & registry settings from the time of the restore point. any file that was deleted that does not mean anything to the operating system itself is not included.

The scan of the "c" drive lasts about 1/4 second. I'm guessing that's a problem? My "a" drive buzzes for a moment, then the box says "checking c drive", then it's over.
