I have over 500 e-mail contacts in my Outlook Express address book.......after spending 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get the info out of my computer at home in a manner that I can transport it and re-install it into my new computer at work I gave up.

Short of printing it out and manually retyping EVERYTHING there just has got to be a better way.....can anyone help me out ?

    Computer illiterate end user............

If outlook express is similar to outlook you can archive it and email it to yourself and have the new computer's outlook/express open it and read it.

I'm not an Outlook Express fan at all, but this should help: http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/email/faq_importaddress.html

I highly recommend moving to www.mozilla.org 's Thunderbird as a mail client.

If the above link doesn't do it for you, search google for: 'outlook express address book' and you should see plenty of helpful results which tells you how to move the .wab file (windows address book) or .pab (older outlook - non outlook express personal address book).

Easy: left click "address book", then left click "file".
Then click "export" and save to a CD-ROM drive (write to CD)
On the new computer follow the same steps, except use "import" and browse for the source (the CD ROM)

    I have a CD-ROM drive in my old box but I don't think I have a CD burner/writer. I'll check that tonight.....

Thanks again......!! Sometimes the obvious is right in front of your face.

    Hmmm, some advice.

Do not store contacts in your address book ... unless you want to help the people that write virsuses. Where do you think these programs first look ... thus they will email themselves to your mates, etc. This is Computers 101.

If you must just create a notepad or word document (or even Excel file) with your contact email addresses in them.

no zip drive needed. winzip does it for you. download/install the trial version. locate files that you exported, right click - 'zip and email'. what it does is compress those files into one .zip file.

more details on zip files: think of it like a binder full of documentation. that binder is full of 'and's and 'the's. each instance of 'and' has a token assigned to it and that eliminates the need to write out 'and' each time, it instead gets filled when the token matches to 'and'. well, that is a pretty simplified version on how compression works.

Thanks..........I'll see what I can do....my old version of Outlook (W98 from 1998 actually) does not have the import/export feature activated.....so it looks like it won't be as easy as first thought.

I appreciate the tips.....I'll try to mess with it right now.
