Now that I have removed the timing mark cover, I see the timing marks but can't decipher them. My vision is deteriorating, and it's getting harder for me to read. Also, all the plumbing in makes it too tight to get the right instruments in to read it.

I have included a text representation of what I think I see thru the port . On the rim of the flywheel I see (from left to right): some lettering, a vertical hash mark, some blank space, another vertical hash mark, and some more lettering.

    what I think I see on the flywheel: XXA | | A%#

Which one is the TDC mark? is it the hashmark to the left, the space between the hashmarks, or the hashmark to the right...see above.

    thanks

    Andy

The "line" is the actual mark. In this example, the pointer is on the "line" that represents TDC for cylinders 1 and 4 (i.e., "PM1-4"). The second "line" to the right represents 3 deg ATDC for cylinders 1 and 4 (i.e. "AF -3*") for this model:

Most timing marks aren't anywhere near this clear and look more like this below (and mechanics often use nail polish or paint to put more visible marks on the clutch pressure plate, and will use different colors for the 1-4 marks and the 5-8 marks to more easily tell them apart -- although in this case the mechanic's white paint mark is a little off for 1-4 3 deg ATDC):

You guys are lucky to have all those fancy markings. All I had to go with is a white dot the size of a needle head and it was behind the pointer.

I have bad eyes too so I positioned a large magnifying glass at the viewing port. Then shined a flaslight at an angle and could see the marks pretty well. Smear some bright paint there too and it will be easier to see. It is very tight with the engine in the car.
