How do I remove the bonnet latch on a 328?

I am replacing the carpet in my 89 328. I would like to be able to pull back about 6" of the front bonnet release latch to allow more room for carpet installation. Currently I removed the screw that holds it in place but doing so only allows for about 1". My car (89 model) has two latches under the bonnet. I assume there is some type of screw/clamp that fastens the cable to the latch. Any words of wisdom on this procedure would be much appreciated.
