Minor technicality. Points may be tied, but by virtue of 7 wins to Alonso's 6, Michael is leading the world championship. If he wins one of the two remaining races, and they end up with a tie in points, Schumacher wins the championship. The caveat being if does not finish with enough points in one of these two remaining races to tie in points.

If MS wins the next race and FA doesn't get any points, MS will clinch the title in Japan.

That's because MS will have 8 wins at the point, FA 6. Even if FA wins in Brazil and MS doesn't race, MS will have more wins and same amount of points.

Match point #1 for MS. :)

Edit: ^Opps, better make that Championship Point #1 ;)

Impy must be ready to OD on painkillers because he can't post here for the next month.

If Alonso and MS come in 1-2 (or 2-1 as the case may be) in Japan, Brazil may turn out to be one of the best races this decade.

maybe Ferrari is more concerned with winning that than MS wining the driver's championship. Ferrari might just play it a bit safe, and everything come down to the last race. Renault might do the same thing. I wonder what Bernie and Max will do if Mazza tries to take out FA, or if Fisi tries to take out MS???

Yes, but it was stated directly after the race that Michael gained the lead in the standings. As far as I understand, this is official and has been official since the Chinese GP ended.

Alonso will be using the same engine from China in Japan. Same with Massa. Not sure about MS or Fisi. Alonso will probably get a higher powered engine for Brazil that will only have to last 1 race.

P.S. I can't even believe we need to discuss ENGINE strategy in F1, wow.

would rather have F1 have no restrictions (other than the width, height and length of the car), than to keep adding more and more. F1 now has far more to do with rules than actual racing. Just one man's opinion....

With no restrictions the drivers would soon being going into the walls at 300mph... Also, the races would be very uncompetive in that some teams would have such a better car than others that they would have to have classes or something.

Yeah, in past years the only competition was for the 2nd and 3rd places mostly, because MS was in 1st the majority of the time.

I think it's spectacular to see MS tied with FA in points. The fact that he did it with no rulings from the stewards, or any controversy in qualifying, but with pure skill proves that he deserves this championship. He was miles ahead of any other Bridgestone runner and pulled off most of his passes ON TRACK, which hasn't been happening that much this season. If this keeps up it will be a great note for MS to end on. Forza Ferrari.

Impy got banned (by another mod) for blurring out the Chinese GP result in many threads.

Now I'm struggling with this title. You're right it is a spoiler, but if I edit the title in any shape or form the thread looses its whole point.

Ron, you really started here something (after making a point about spoiling the Chinese result). What shall we do?

PS: Not even a minor technicality: If MS and Alonso flip flop their results in the next two GPs and end up with the same amount of points, MS is champion.

Yes, technically you are right about the title, but that is why I waited until the morning after to deliver this pill. At some point, 99% of the world will know the results of the event from the day before. Maybe there should be a definitive policy, like no title that would give away race results for 24 hours after the event is over?

So how about changing the title of this thread to: "How Do The Results Of The Chinese GP Affect The Driver's Point Standings?"

Since we have no definitive policy caution is the word. Thanks for the new title Ron.

I remember once being on vaca in Finland in the MS vs Mika battle and couldn't watch a GP. I had to walk circles around any newsstand for the next week until I was back in the US where my VCR was waiting with the tape. :)

I am the same way, if I have not watched the race or game yet I answer the phone with Don't tell me who won the GP! I do this with american football also :)

I try to never watch live TV, always TIVO for the past few years.

MS gets a new engine in Japan while Alonso gets his new engine in Brazil. Alonso's DNF at Monza allowed to put in a fresh engine at China.

One point to note is that there is a 14 day gap between Suzuka and Brazil - pretty long time for Michael's used engine to lie in storage till it pulled out again for the next race. By contrast, Alonso's used engine lies in storage only for 5 days between China and Suzuka. Possibly with testing and everything Renault can maybe come up with a more powerful engine for Brazil. It may make a difference to the results.

i think Ferrari will be going all out for a win in Japan. the car-driver-package is just awesome at the moment. if japan doesn't rain, it's MS's race. MS is very very dominant in Japan. remember, i'm damn sure he wants to win, as he ( potentially ) could be the last man to win in suzuka.

    p/s : Andreas, nice sig!

Sounds like Alonso's engine will be more tired than MS's engine who gets seven more days of rest :)
