I’ve just got home from yet another Sunday lunch in Italy... beautiful seafood restaurant; I thought my friend was ordering the ‘mixte’ antipasto plate for 3 of us to share... no, 3 giant plates turned up (prawns, scampi, sardines in saor, baccala, octopus, big scallops, little scallops, laguna mini prawns (name’s gone out of my head); so huge I could barely face my main plate (handmade spaghetti with vongole). I was done - Cirri followed up with a plate of Fritto (fried seafood and vegetables), then coffee, then limoncello...
    I don’t think I’ll eat for a week...
How do they do this and yet none of them are fat? Seriously, even tiny women here can pack in a weeks worth of food in a sitting but they’re still svelte? There must be a secret ingredient in the olive oil...
I was worrying about fitting all my new shoes in the suitcase but now I think I should be worrying about fitting ME on the plane!

None fat ? You sure you are in Italy ?

Some are lucky to eat all they like whilst others look at food and put it on.

You Karen are one of the lucky ones. Consider it a blessing however if you are concerned, I am sure if you drank coke and at Danial donuts every day you would not be thin.

BTW essential fatty acid is one of the keys, Olive oil, fish oil , flaxseed oil.

There is no such thing as vegetable oil , its seed oil refined with solvents ( Heptane ) Thank the Americans for that.

I always hear the term ‘Italian mamas’
So don’t think this is true.

human bodies are reasonably similar regardless of ethnicity, more calories in than out, you’ll add weight?

My guess is it’s all natural ingredients, no processed ingredients and apart from the pasta is carb and refined sugar free food

Ah, the Mediterranean Diet, the French Paradox, I've heard it all before. It boils down to the science. Science is observation, hypothesis, and testing. If the observation is flawed (too small a sample size in a population, in this case), then the hypothesis will be flawed. Same with Climate Change, come to think of it.

Oh they definitely exist, and yes there are SOME fat young people, but nothing like the plague of fatsos in Aus.
Interesting the comment re sugar since I have not used more than a few teaspoonsful at home, and I cook most nights (except when I’ve been out to lunch). Definitely think the quality of ingredients, especially oil, is big part of it. Meat is also eaten in much smaller quantities than we do; way more seafood around here.

As you know, the cost of food is one of the key driver here. The accessible foods are sugary foods and fatty meats/ fast food..as oppose to more costly healthy foods...and definitely seafood.
Have a look at US - a prime example, and Aus is close behind

That is absolutely true Chin, In Oz, I spend about $100 week on groceries, just for 1 very small person! I eat whatever I feel like, which ranges wildly - could be liver one day, oysters the next...My nephew alone would eat 3-4 times as much as I do. I really have sympathy for young families trying to eat well these days.
