i recently purchased a 348 and in a major right now. I figured since everything is opened what can i do to make this thing faster ? I have never driven a 348, imagine that ! but i come from under 5secs and 11-12secs 1/4 mile cars. This car is a looker and not intented for drag racing but what easy way is there to pull a few more ponies so i can pass an empty minivan. I presently bought a capristo stage 3 exhaust with straight pipe cats. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciately, everyone calls these cars slow so help me
The exhaust is a large part of it. Bore your throttle bodies - check with RobZ here High flow air filter Remove MAF screens Port and polish intake plenum and runners This is where most of us Stooges are at. If you want to spend huge cash, have a set of custom headers made. Doing this gets you 300-305 HP at the hubs on a Dynapak compared to 284 for a stock single can exhausted engine.
I am a newbie since I have only owned my 348 for about 2 months. My uninformed advice is to leave the car alone and keep it stock. No matter what you do to the car there will always be someone who has a faster car. Instead try and enjoy the looks of the car, the feel of it, what it is like to drive it and what it sounds like. When you make them faster where can you drive them. I love my 348 and if there are cars that are faster I dont care. I enjoy the car for what it is and when it was made. It truly is spectalcular and I love to drive it and feel the way it handles. And the sound well that puts you in a different world. Good luck to you and your new car. Mel
IF you want to have fun with your car and mod if a little because that is your joy and hobby, then follow my suggestions. If you are after huge gains to keep up a modern WRX, then either get a different car, take some drivers education from the clubs or look into spending some real money on a project like turbocharging. For not much money, you can get about 35 gross HP.
vvassallo : thank you so much for your answers in private too. I sent your suggestions to my Ferrari guy last week angelis : thank you for the youtube clip, my 6 year old son needs to see it everynight to make his day. I had the tubi decatt , loved the sound but then i tried a cappy stage 3, was just another world. Your video was the best sounding clip by far with a tubi and btw you dont need brakes Thank YOU all . i understand but i just wanted to know if we can make this slow turtle faster. just curious, how much faster does ( exhaust , filter, maf ) make the car ? say its now at 14sec 1/4 mile. whats the difference.
If you want a dragster, buy an American car. If you want style, design and exclusivity, go for the Ferrari.
i would have bought a 355/360 if i wanted more power but i wanted that 348 look more than anything. i would be really happy if i had the looks of a 348 and power of a 355 ! I am pretty sure if those 2 cars would have identical power there would no longer be all this 348vs355, cause not many give a ... about the seat comfort. i just want to get closer in acceleration if i can, thats all. Again i never drove the car, but all i hear is the same old saying, its a turtle ....starting to worry me. I sold a turbo 911 to get a 348 because of everything all of you love about it. Thanks Again!
One of the Fchat members on here put 355 lower door panels on his 348 so I would think you could reverse that if you like the 348 look. There is not alot of difference in the two models otherwise. Mike Reading, PA 348 TS SS
Here is the short list for what I've done so far to my car: Tapper ported throttle bodies Ported intake runners Mass airflow sensor screens removed High flow metal core cats High flow muffler Custom headers (those where big boy money to have made) All that was good for 305hp @ 7200rpm, and roughly 234lb/ft of torque @ 6000rpm, all to the hubs on a Dynapack dyno.
I never have liked that statement "enjoy it for what it is". Where is the fun in that? Some people like to tinker. It is just what some of us like.
Ernie has done little more than the rest of us Stooges. The numbers do not tell the whole story - I forgot to mention this in the first place. You asked how to make the car faster. Well, these small changes we are describing may not sound like they are throwing off a lot of performance, but the translation in throttle resonse is huge and definitely noticeable. That's the thing with dynos, they can tell you what power you are making but they are not real good at telling how freely the engine revs after these changes. Beleive us, the modest changes we made are all for the better and will leave you grinning. And I don't get Sy's commment about brakes. I think mine are pretty awesome for the street, but I have not really thrashed them around a track. I have done some aggressive canyon running and they are more than up to that task. Now if you want to talk brakes, we ahve this 348 Challenge car with some freaking huge-azzed Brembos on them that will extract your teeth.
Thats called a 348 GTC ....well not quite the power but very close re power to weight....brakes not too shabby either. I haven't driven a standard 348 but suspect the chnages suggested above by the resident "stooges" will leave you very happy indeed with your purchase.....in any case one could hardly describe a std 348 as a turtle
Other ways to make it faster: Lose some pounds... Having just had the passenger seat out to re-dye it, I can tell you they are REALLY heavy. Improve the brakes. Ensure that the suspension and geo is properly set up. Take some focused driving lessons... It sounds daft but the 4 items above can make a huge difference to how fast you are. If its drag style, off the lights action you are after, a modified ricer is your cheapest way, or even a crotch rocket. This video gives an idea of what I'm saying: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KU8Pi8Tahc&feature=youtube_gdata_player[/ame]
Yes, it could be done on a 355. In fact, it would actually be easier to go that way verses a 348 with 355 door panels. When I did my 355 door panels on my 348, I found that the 355 doors still have the 348 mounting holes in them.
Mine were ok on the road, but dreadful on track although I am a bit of a late breaker. I also recall once how other Ferraris had to stop due to over heating brakes, but mine kept going.
I am also a recent 348 owner (93 SS) and undergoing a major. I tend to agree with Mel above in the thread: enjoy the car for what it is. It is not super powerful but it is a ton of fun to drive and it really looks fantastic and different. This being said, I have read a lot about the Scuderia Rampante gold connectors and a lot of people seem to agree that not only do they increase torque and throttle response but they ALSO increase the reliability of the electrical system going forward. I am seriously considering them as my engine is out. Anyone experienced the kit on a 348 2.7?
Errico, next time we do a major, we should each get a Gold connector kit and a hose kit from Dave Helms and get Ralph to do the work. I'm sure the cars will kick a little more arse!
