My friend bought one about three months ago down here.
It is a cute toy and all but I think the shift quality is too jerky, plus it has a veeery slow acceleration which IMHO is quite annoying.
On the safety side, I don't think you wanna be in a smart when colliding with an Escalade, or even a chevy city cab.

Personal conclusion: fun for small european city roads only.

MB of devon has one outside philly. They cannot sell it but I did get a ride in it a while back when my friend used to own the dealership. They are very cool!

You know, if it was really smart it would figure out how to get here itself.

Yo! Everything's going well you gotta come to Philly and take me for a ride in the TR ;) Back on topic the smart was awesome and a real blast to cruise around the Philly burbs. We only went 20 miles, but it was a lot of fun and the car is actually really comfortable!

Ya stick it (undeclared) in the front of a container full of pinball machines and run it on dealer plates.

At least, that's how the one I drove a few years ago got into the States. Cool car, the owner ended up selling it on ebay untitled.
