How do you clean a car cover?

I did not know there was any specialist way of cleaning it. I have always thrown mine into the washing machine. well i don't the wife does, but you get what i mean

 

+1 on the washing machine, that's what I do...

 

I've always wonder this too. Good to know I can just put it in the washer..

 

Just don't use fabric softeners or anything other than detergent -- any residue in the fabric can finds its way onto the car's paint.

Also, and I never use car covers indoors so I don't know if there are instructions on the Ferrari red ones, but be careful about how you dry it. Cotton covers shrink, and synthetic fibre ones would probably require a lower heat setting.

 

agreed, I only use a little bit of detergent, no fabric softener...and always air dry, I've never put it in a drier (it's the OEM Ferrari red cover)

 

if You think Your washingmachine is to small, connect with someone running a stable. Washing horsecovers (?) is common and they use larger machines for this purpose.

I bought a Covercraft Formfit, and Covercraft had a lot of others available. I seem to recall that some of the covers were listed a suitable for machine wash, and some weren't. May have been more an issue of size/bulk of the cover, ie, heavier covers may not fit in a home washing machine. If so, I would use a large machine at a commercial laundry. So unless a cover has a tag saying not to wash it, that's what I'd do.

 

Just don't wash the "Evolution-type" indoor / outdoor covers --- made by Kimberly-Clark (the same company that manufactures Kleenex and many other paper products). They are actually made with a blend of cotton / polyesther / and (yes) paper fibers ! They will disintegrate in the wash !

I brush and shop-vacuum mine while it's on the car ---- gets most of the dirt (and bird sh**) off. A little upholstery cleaner (like Blue Coral) takes care of greasy spots

I have an indoor cover that I have washed about 5 times---Works perfect.... I have never taken the OEM one out of the bag....

 

IIRC the original ones have 'machine washable' on the label, I have certainly washed mine a few times with no adverse effect.
