Guys, This might sound stupid, but Im trying to jump start the 430 and its not turning over........have not really had a chance to go over the manuals because the manuals were misplaced........can someone tell me where the battery is?
Get a trickle charger and plug it into the Cigarette lighter socket....you do not want to jump start a modern Ferrari with all the electronics in them!
Copy/Pasted from the F430 user manual PDF file. Push start In the event that the ignition system malfunctions, you can “push start” the vehicle as follows: • Run the “system start-up” procedure (see page 67) • As the vehicle picks up speed, request an UPshift with the gearshift in N. This procedure should be avoided unless there is an emergency situation! Basically the "System start-up" procedure is putting the ingnition on II and selecting N.
The problem is that when the batterry is completely dead, there isn't enough power to select nuetral or engage the 1 gear on the push start? Correct? The only time I could see this being useful is in the case of a started failure or a slightly dead battery. You can just start the car, but not from the battery. You have to pull the panel off behind the driver seat on the floor. There are about 8 allen head screws. This takes some time. Then attached the high amp battery charger with about 50amp charge. \eit set for a bit, 30min. Then insert the key and attempt to start the car. Do not under any circumstance attached the battery charger or jumper cables while the key is in the ignition, the voltage spike can cause the instrument cluster to go haywire and the odometer starts scrolling like a slot machine and stops at "55555555" miles. It's a huge hassle to get that reset.
A trickle charger didn't work on a the cigarette lighter sockets i have tried because the ligher is a switch 12volt power supply, which mean that circuit is only open on when the key is in the iginition? I haven't checked all Ferrari models, but that was my experience so far. Hense the reason we install the Battery Tender leads on the power distribution blocks behind the drivers seat on 360/430's
if its in the same place as the 360M, it should be under the passenger foot rest. u need to unscrew the metal plate under the foot rest to access the battery
I had the dealer install a battery tender that comes out behind the driver seat for easy access. I have used it, but I have not suffered low or dead battery even with 4 weeks of inactivity. Also, I was told that if the battery goes dead, a lot of parameters in the ECU gets lost and you will need to let the car idle for at least 20 mins before driving so it can gather all the base information again. I was told this for my CS and the same for Enzo. The dealer kept emphasizing...don't let the battery go dead!
You are correct that the cigarette lighter is disabled when the ignition is off. The battery is under the passenger foot rest. However, you have to be extremely careful, because there is a steel bar that goes slightly over the battery to hold the foot rest. It is very close to the battery + terminal. You could easily short the positive terminal to this bar with a jumper cable. You should fully loosen the right hand bolt of this bar and raise up that bar by string, etc. You will need a long allen wrench to do that. I used a Tee handle allen wrench. If you are not mechanically adept, be very careful. After this, get a trickle charger! The alarm, clock, etc. are a constant drain, and thsu your battery will die if the car is driven infrequently!
Here's what the battrey area looks like. Note the steel bar that holds the passenger foot rest!! It is very close to the + terminal. Image Unavailable, Please Login
this piece looks like it is optional from the factory? anyone know how much it is vs a regular trickle charger? So the regular charger thats been plugged to the lighter doesnt mean squat then if the circuit is closed without the key.
What's depicted in the upper left is the factory trickle charger. I believe that's available only when the car is ordered. It has to go on the battery or on a set of terminals behind the driver's seat under the removeable panel. See this thread about charger discussion. $60.00 does it. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107259
I will tomorrow recheck the power situation to the lighter. Now, I can't remember if it's always on or it's switched, but I can easily enough check with a meter and advise.
on the 430, the hook up for the factory charger is under the hood. Remove panel to right of air conditioner filter. It plugs right in there. No need to go str8 to battery.
I don't think Verone has a built-in charger otherwise he might not have experienced battery failure. Can't tell from what he has stated.
I measured the voltage today at the cigarette lighter, and I discovered that it is always live. I had thought it was active only when the key was turned, but I found that was not true!. So, it's possible a trickle charger could be plugged into this outlet to get you started afer 12-24 hours of trickle charging or until the green light on the charger stays on indicating that the battery is fully charged.
no built in charger........was using a battery charger throught the lighter....but maybe as one of the other members stated, the power doesnt go through. The dealer picked up the car and did 3 recalls on it plus replaced the battery. Car only has 200 miles on it and is about 6 months old. Cant believe this car has 3 recalls already.
Technically, they are not recalls but service advisories. This is common practice for Ferraris. My car was delivered last August and I just had 4 updates done. However, it has 4100 miles without so much as a hiccup. Sounds like your problems stem from not enough use and not stored properly with a trickle charger. Ferrari of Denver actually installs (free of charge) trickle chargers on all their new Ferraris because of problems like you have experienced. Dave
On delivery dealership ran a line behind the driver's seat to a terminal for attachment to a trickle charger. If I don't use the car for 5 days or more (arbitrary) I hook it up.No problems in 3k miles.
Dealers would be smart to do this as a regular course. $60.00 is nothing compared to a service call! Rifledriver made a connection for me to the terminals under the panel behind the driver's seat. I keep the charger on my car daily now. It's cheap insurance.
So does the dealer run a line from the battery under the passenger foot rest to a panel behind the driver's seat and that is where one attaches a battery tender? I guess that will be more cost effective than ordering the car with the factory battery charger. Does anyone have pictures of how the battery tender attaches to behind the driver's seat panel? TIA.
No. There are terminals near the engine to which a connection goes to a rubberized connector inside the vehicle. You can then run the trickle charger from the passenger or driver's door to this rubberized connector. If I get a chance I'll take off the cover and photo but won't have time till the weekend.
Dave, Can you tell me where this is or how to access it? My car is from FoD and I am experiencing a situation where I need to charge the battery very soon or it will go completely flat - not enough juice to turn it over right now.
