A couple of the braid-covered non-fuel hoses on my QV's engine are looking pretty ratty because the braid unraveled at the original cut leaving a fuzzy collar near the hose end. Is there a way to prevent the cover unraveling on new hose or a new cut where I can cut it back to clean braid? Lacking other ideas I thought maybe a small collar of heat shrink tube would do it.

I've used fingernail clippers to nip the frayed ends, india black ink (non water soluble) to redarken the greying threads, and dabs of superglue to keep the ends from fraying. You'll find similar glue for similar issues in most fabric shops.

Haven't tried it on these hoses, but the usual way to take care of this would be to briefly pass the freshly cut ends through open flame (i.e. a pocket lighter).

I think the braid on the hoses is cloth and trying to seal the end with a lighter won't work. Works fine for polymer braids but not cloth. You can always using a single wrap of electrical tape or some heat shrink tubing to tidy up the end.

The superglue trick works well and so does some clear nail polish or black paint. Just about any hardening liquid that can be absorbed into the ends to bond them together.

    fray check or clear polyurethane.

however, if they are frayed that bad, you probably need new hoses.

I am replacing them. I want to prevent the braid cover from coming apart at the cuts again.
