There is a wide leather cover just below the rear window of a 355 Spider that appears to be held in place by 2 exposed decorative "buttons", ostensibly to conceal 2 fasteners below them that hold the cover in place. Can someone explain how to remove these without damaging them? I'm trying to get the cover off and don't want to screw something up.

8mm bolts from inside the engine bay, impossible to see, but possible to find by hand.

Really?! I thought they might pry off and expose a screw. An actual pair of bolts in the engine bay!?!? Its only a leather wrapped cover for something. A sort of 3' long interior trim. I can't imagine why it would need bolts? I know, I know....its a Ferrari. What is it covering?

Just look behind the seats directly below the convertible top window. It rests on the carpeted shelf there. Its about 3" wide x 3" high and x 36" long. The 2 "buttons" are right there too, right on top, about 24" apart.

I did a little research after Mitch's reply (should have done this in the first place). I don't know if he was pulling my leg or mistook what I was talking about but the cover is NOT held on by bolts from the engine bay. Parts diagram 111 for a Spider shows this cover and the "buttons" are what Ferrari calls "plugs" that apparently snap in over a screw and washer that screw into s pair of plastic blocks that are part of the rear window crosspiece. I'll try to pry them out carefully with a plastic wedge to get at the screws and report my results.

I finally got around to removing the "buttons" on the cover below the rear window. As I suspected, they just pop out using a pop sickle stick filed to a sharp wedge. That, along with a nylon wedge tool, made them come out easily. Below is a long (1") Philips head screw about 1/2" down below the leather surface. It does not have a washer like the parts diagram shows because its not necessary. The screw rest in a countersunk metal flange that secures the cover.

An interesting aside but related issue is removing the 2 side covers that include the leather socks over the top's 2 primary hydraulic cylinders. The driver's side has 1 Philips type screw that is a little hard to see without a light but is reasonably easy to remove at its front outer corner. Then just pull up at the front of the cover, lifting the sock off the cylinder and pulling forward a little to pull the rear flange from under the remaining rearmost leather trim. The whole cover, together with the leather covered opening towards the rear of the fiberglass substructure, comes off as a unit. However, the passenger's side is another story.

You'd think each side would be the same but no such luck, they are different. On The passenger's side there are 3 screws, also hard to see. After their removal, the cover comes off much like the other side but, only the front half of the cover comes out. The rear portion, unlike the driver's side is part of a much larger section extending all the way back and under the convertible top frame mounts. To remove this element, as far as I can see, you'd have to remove most if not all of the top frame itself. Needless to say, I didn't remove it.

Why am I doing all this? To refinish / re-dye the remaining leather to match the rest of the refinished leather in the car. This piece will just have to be refinished in place inside the car.

Many thanks for the information, Jerry. That's going straight in my archives (FChat usually demands photos for theirs, but, IMHO, your description is ample :D )

    Cheers
