I am referring to the upper trim piece - see item #33 in the attached diagram. I have removed the lower trim piece and the screws connecting the upper and lower pieces. The upper piece is loose but cannot come out. Do you need to remove the steering wheel?

You have to squeeze one to separate them after you remove the screw(s) that hold them together and separately the screws that hold the assembly to the column.

It seems to me that it's a tight fit, but no "trick" involved. You do have the steering column tilted all the way down, don't you? Or maybe you have to undo the instrument cluster (2 screws). I don't remember for sure, sorry!

The bottom piece came out with no issues.

I tried with the steering column in both up and down positions - the upper piece is moving around (i.e. it isn't attached) but doesn't want to come out. Maybe removing the cluster or wheel will provide some additional room.

You need to tilt up the gauge cluster, remove the 2 phillips screws and just tilt it up, the top cover will come right out.

That's right----2 guage cluster screws must be removed--then tilt the entire cluter up out of your way

    No no no no no.

To get the top part off you LOWER the column. Pull the lever (#24) that is on the bottom down, then lower the column all the way down. NOW you will be able to lift off the top part of the column cover.

I tried that. It didn't work.

Steve's recommendation worked perfect. Lifting the instrument binnacle frees up the necessary space to take the piece out.

Well it has always worked for me.

None the less, I'm glad to hear Steve's solution worked better. If there is a better way to skin the cat I'm all for it.
