OK, tough one for you guys....

My slave cylinder on the hydraulic clutch (83 Mondial) was leaking. I pulled the thing apart to find a very worn seal on the piston. I ordered the new seal, for $42 from Rutlands. Looks like it's worth about $0.99.

How the HELL do you get it on the piston? It's very hard rubber and has to go over a very large piston to fit in the groove. I heated it in boiling water and that doesn't even approach making it pliable enough to put on. For $42, I'm trying to treat this thing with a little respect. Do I need to heat it hotter in something else? I don't want to damage it.

Any suggestions from the experts who have done this before?

    Thanks

Now I'm really curious, since I just destroyed the aforementioned $42 seal that looks like it is worth $0.99.

Plan B, I just ordered a 5 pack of what looks to be the same exact seal from McMaster Carr for $3.00, meaning that the $42 seal was in fact only worth $0.60.

Alas, no Mondial driving for another week. Sigh. I'm getting tempted to just go down to the hardware store and buy a big fat o-ring.

Did you try calling Whitepost or Apple hyd. to see if they have the seal. They rebuild them so you should be able to get one from them and they will tell you how to get the seal on.

Uh, thanks Lusso5 except in that thread (which I already read in research) the seal isn't replaced....he replaces the entire cylinder. THAT is quite easy.

OK BM I would recommend that you get Hemmings Motor News . They usually have a wealth of knowledge on all collector cars . If you go to the Ferrari section and to the parts section you will find a few places that specialize in brakes and MC rebuild and repair. Whitepost is the most noticable. It is
    White post restorations

    Another is
    Apple Hyd.

As for Hemmings , just look up
