I've always found colloquialisms and/or local dialects very interesting. For example, here in IL I say pop instead of soda.

    Here's a couple:

    jury-rig...jerry-rig
    kitty-corner...caddy-corner

I say those the first way. :)

    route

    roo-t or row-t. I did a paper roo-t but I bought a row-ter.

Hero, hoagie, sub, gyro. In Ohio, a gyro is not what a sub is in Boston. Where the heck do they say "hoagies"???

I saw a beautiful blonde walk into a restaurant after a drive wearing a T-shirt which read, "You say tomato- I say F*** YOU!"

Should I throw a spanner in the works?

Windscreen? Or warp power to the the windshields?

How many car guys wear a bonnet? ;)
How many hoods can you fit in the boot?
Do american cars have trunks because they're heavier than an elephant?

And "skip to the loo, my darlin'" means something different in England. :D

    LOL, never thought about that...

I say "cew-pon" and, if I want a sandwich from the deli (of which there are none here in Georgia), I'll ask for a hero... It's always been hero; it'll always be hero... Hoagies, subs, grinders - that's all just hokie... I flip back and forth on "route" depending on what I'm saying; kinda weird when you think about it...

Aunt = "awnt"... There's a 'u' in it for a reason... I never understood why some people pronounce it "ant"...

They were hoagies in Jersey and in the bits of PA where I've spent time.
Here's one I've struggled with for years: Do you call them fire flies or lightening bugs? I grew up in DC where both names were used, but I always assumed that fire fly was a northern construction (only southerners seem to love to say "bug").

I can't think of a silent vowel that's silent without affecting the sound of another vowel... I understand the silent K, but it's a consonant... Why have a silent vowel if it's not changing the sound of another vowel...?

    Where's Yin...? :)
