So if the car is wrecked (or the gearbox trashed) by the buyer during the test drive and no money has been exhchanged ....

With everyone's permission may I add my thoughts to the OP even though I am not a buyer/owner?

It's nice to see that this thread has been resurrected from it's long slumber just in time for me. I sold my last F-car (a GTC) in '89, but a friend has been trying to get me into a mid-engine. I'm leaning toward a 355, and have been offered rides in a couple, but I don't feel right taking those rides unless & until I'm really ready to plunk down the cash.

FWIW, in the Porsche community, the word is, "Buy the seller". In my opinion, it (generally) works if you have good interview skills; you can learn a helluva lot about what the car is from who the seller is. Furthermore, I think this can work even through a broker or dealer. I have never bought a car this way, but I have sold three. All had meticulous records that showed how the cars had been restored/maintained/upgraded, and I think that something of my personality relating to cars came through.

I would never buy a car without driving it first how do you know if it is right for you without driving it? I also bring a financial statement with me proving that I have the funds liquid to pay for the car, I have found most dealers do not refuse test drives (albeit I am at the bottom of the Ferrari food chain) my advice is if you are a serious buyer and can prove that you have the funds and are still refused a test drive walk away.

If you're serious and are truly ready to buy immediately pending the test drive, you will be able to test drive whatever you want.

If you're not serious yet and are looking to test drive a car out of curiosity, stick to soliciting drives from dealers and note that they don't have to give you one no matter how nicely you ask.
