From a 0-experience 0-training starting point? From my limited research, I have been advised that one should not start by going to a school for certification/licensing, but start out as a bar-back and climb the ladder. It makes sense to learn from real-life applications.

IMO, the list of traits are: to have a great memory, ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment, strong wrists, being attractive or having a pair of basketballs on your chest won’t hurt either.

Some things I’m not clear about:
What type of establishments would bring in the most $ given that you are willing to serve in 'riskier' environments. Lounge? Night club? Sports bar?
What type of clientele tip well? Does it relate to age group, crowd (hipity hop, electronic/dance, gentleman's club...)?
What are the busier nights other then Fri/Sat? Does it depend on the club i.e. sports bar?

I would start out by drinking, and drinking a hell of a lot. All over the place, and trying many different drinks in each outing. MANY DIFFERENT DRINKS. You will meet interesting people just like yourself, and lots of really neat girls. And I would drink a lot, I mean a hell of a lot. All the time. Pretty soon you can mix a drink with your eyes closed. Then you have got the job by the ass.
    Good luck.

You need to start off as a barback, lugging ice, washing glasses, mopping floors, all that stuff. Show up early for work, pay attention, and eventually one of the bartenders will call in with a hangover, and boom, you're promoted.

I was a bartender for awhile back in the day. The best gig is to work at a busy country joint where everyone drinks beer for the most part. You can make some good money doing nothing but popin' bottle caps and making rum/cokes. Working where you are busting your ass to lines of people who are ordering exotic mixed drinks of all kinds, and half the drinks have names the people seemed to have made up, plain sucks.

One name that stuck in my head was someone ordered a "Three Legged Dog" LOL Turns out if was actually a Three Wise Men. I think they made up the "Legged Dog" part. Funny though.

I went to a bartending school. Upon graduation they will set you up with interviews. I ended up at a hotel bar which was alright as it was never too packed. Although I wasn't making as much as someone who was working a Sunset strip joint but it was alright as I was in school and I had more flexible hours. (more shifts available as opposed to a club)

A couple of my buddies went the barback route and they ended up as bartenders and after a couple of years experience a few of them are working in some pretty good places where they are taking home 150-200 on the weekdays and 300+ on Friday and Saturday nights.
