I was reading in my owners manual about the bypass valve operation in gears 1,3,4,5,6 opens at 2800rpm and in 2nd at 4000rpm.... but as far as i can tell, at least using the ricamb parts diagrams and downloaded work shop manuals, there is no sensor to tell the ECU what gear the car is in. Again im referring to the operation of a manual trans car.

    Anyone know?

It knows what speed you are.
It knows what RPM the engine is in.
It can figure out what gear you are in.

Actually I think it's 3rd gear where the valve can only open at 4000 RPM+...
