I am trying to install some rebuilt oil cooler lines in my '83 400i automatic, but nothing seems to fit. My question for today is, how does the factory oil cooler install? It sits in the middle of the radiator, below the upper radiator hose and between the pusher fan and the automatic transmission fluid cooler. There are three brackets brazed or welded to the radiator shell, one up top and two down below. Thin bolts with rubber bushings about 1/2 inch thick secure the oil cooler to the brackets. There are two ways for the fasteners and the cooler to go together. Walking from the radiator side to the engine side, they are:
    1. Oil cooler flange, rubber bushing, bracket.
    2. Bracket, rubber bushing, oil cooler flange.
Which is the correct order? My car as it came into my possession had the second configuration. But the ATF cooler has the first. The first configuration puts the cooler flush with the radiator. The second leaves a gap of about 1/2 inch.
I know I should have taken a photo and posted it up. I will do that tonight if I get no answers today. But other owners can easily see which way their oil cooler is mounted, by checking if it's even with the ATF cooler or if it stands further out, away from the radiator.

Some photos. The first one shows the ATF cooler and the bolt and rubber bushing for the top flange of the oil cooler. It shows how the ATF cooler is mounted cooler flange-bushing-bracket, while the oil cooler had been mounted bracket-bushing-cooler flange. The second photo shows the two bolts and bushings for the bottom flange of the oil cooler.

I can see my thread is not lighting a fire. However, I skimmed through some of the posts regarding cars that have been offered for sale recently and the results are ambiguous. In the first photo, of an '84 400i, I really can't tell, although it looks like it's cooler flange-bushing-bracket, front to rear. The upper bracket for the oil cooler is hidden behind the upper radiator hose, making it hard to tell for sure. In the second photo, of a '77 400, it's obvious that the oil cooler and the ATF cooler are mounted the same: cooler flange-bushing-bracket. I am therefore leaning in this direction, and concluding that a Dreaded Previous Owner of my car had installed the oil cooler improperly at some point.

This is the configuration we see in the photo of the '77 400 Automatic parts car, above. On the 400i Automatic, the two coolers are side-by-side, with the hoses entering the oil cooler from the other direction. (I would say, from the driver's side, but that also would be ambiguous.)

Can't comment on the trans. cooler because I don't have one but I'd think it would be the same.

Here's a pic, just top view only…don't have a bottom pic but I'd assume it's the same way.

Thanks for the answers. Now that I know how to put the cooler in, I still need to figure out how to put in the engine coolant bypass tube. This is where I ran into trouble. Word to the wise: before disassembling your Ferrari take lots of pictures!
