7-11 now rents DVDs. Basically they're second-run movies for $4.99, but they're only good for 48 hours and you throw the disc away. How does the movie stop playing after two days? I remember Blockbuster looking into this, but there was an uproar over all the extra DVDs that would end up in the landfills.

I believe oxygen is used to decay the DvD. As soon as the DvD is opened the surface of the disc reacts with the air and decays it.

All this talk of being "green", and we have this type of technology now.

IIRC, that's basically it. There's a chemical reaction that makes the DVD unreadable, IIRC, the protection layer (which is transparent) gets blurry after coming into contact with oxygen.

So that means you have 48 hours to burn to a rw-cd.

Speaking of Netflix, what kind of arrangement do they have with the post office? They claim to have shipped over 1 billion movies, which means 2 billion deliveries including returns. Even at $.25 shipping that's $1B just in postage!

    Not a good one.

I remember reading an article where Netflix defended their position, claiming they actually save the USPS money because they deliver all their envelopes to the post office instead of having them pick it up from their warehouses.

70% failure rate? 2 years to notice? Your tax money at work (or higher postage rates at work, since I believe the USPS is funded only by postage rates)

Wow-that's interesting. I would think the USPS would show Netflix a selection of mailers from which they could choose to use. But either way, isn't Netflix a dinosaur? At some point in the not-so-distant future this will all be done digitally--you would think the film industry would be a little more pro-active with the download business.

IMHO the film (and music) industry is scared to hell if they hear the word "download" only whispered...

Yeah, it's amazing to me at how paralyzed they seem to be in harnessing new technologies. They don't want to do it, and they sure as hell don't want someone else doing it! They're so worried about guarding their turf that they don't see the forest throught the trees.
