    Hey,
I'm a Sophomore now, looking at doing pre-med (majoring in Bio or chemistry) and going to med school in Johns Hopkins, which is 2 years from now.

What do I need to get into it?

There's really no need to go to Johns Hopkins for med school. There are tons of great schools around the nation that provide a very good education as well. Plus, most other schools cost less.

Agree with Al. Why so set on JHU? (FYI brother went there on a full scholarship for undergrad. got into medschoool there but went to UVA instead...)

Getting in to Med school is competetive enough, let alone aiming for JHU. My advice if you want to go to med school.. DON'T MAJOR IN PRE-MED!!!

Major in something you will enjoy, and excell. if it provides you a back-up in case you don't get in to med school, even better (Engineering, accounting).

Would I be able to get into JHU for undergrad also? Or is it impossible?

I'm not really set on JHU, but I'm just wondering. It looks like a great school, and it always talked about, when I google "undergrad school or med school."

What if "your thing" is sciences? I'm really good at biology, etc. So if I major in Bio/Chem etc, will Med school still accept me?

OK I'm confused are you a sophmore... in college or high school? You going to med school in 2 years??? Can you get into JHU for undergrad...

Edit: upon re-reading I think I have it: You are a high school sophmore. If you are going to go to med school save you money and go to a state school for undergrad. (unless you get a scholarship). Don't waste to much energy thinking about which med school... you will have to do VERY well in undergrad and the MCAT, and that combined will define if and where you go to med school.

Bottom line: Study hard, and do well, and you have as good a chance as anyone (except the Dean's daughter ;))

    Well,

If he is a sophomore and going to be in med school in two years, I'd bet he's in college. He's probably asking about the possibility of transferring. Some people do transfer schools...........

JHU is a great school with a stellar reputation. Though, why don't you contact the school and ask them what their requirements are?

I agree about going to a state school over a private for undergrad. No reason to blow all your money in undergrad.

I hate to say its all about the numbers, but I spelled "attached" wrong on my JHU application. And I engaged my interviewer in a rousing conversation about Friends and Boston Public. And they still admitted me. Competition for the med school is obviously more fierce.

I got into John Hopkins. Decided not to go since i wasnt thinking about getting into med or any other science degree. Its a great school dont get me wrong, but there are plenty of other options for going the phd route.

+1 on not majoring in Pre med, that is the past, now many our majoring in all sorts and still going for med school. I believe a hot one now is Engineering. If you decide last minute that you dont want to go the med route, engineering is a great back fall.

+1 on going to a university in state, i only decided to go to a private university, because i got scholarship that would pay for it. Undergrad isnt much of a big deal, hey its great going to a great undergrad school, but you dont have to get in a financial bind over it.

But your barely a soph, so plenty of time to think about it. Jr. year is the year when its tough.

    Good luck.

Going to Hopkins Undergrad doesn't help getting into their med school very much. You still need a great GPA, MCAT, recommendations, etc. Some feel its harder since Hopkins undergrad for science or engineering (supposedly) isn't a walk in the park.

An advantage though is that you will have quality research labs opportunity, if that kind of thing floats your boat.

If you have specific questions about either the Undergrad, Grad, or Med school at Hopkins, either PM me or preferably instant message me.

No harm. Good luck. As far as getting ito med school,... Doing well in undergrad, and MCAT scores are far more important than which school you go (as long as you go to a somewhat reasonable school). I recommend a state school. But go where you will be happy. this will make you more likely to do well...

I noticed in residency the other residents that went to high power, big name schools were hopeless.

They could TALK about it all day, but they were disasters when they tried to start an IV, stitch a wound, draw blood etc.

They just never had to do any of that stuff in med school; the hospitals could afford a "blood drawing team" and an "IV starting tech" etc.

Yeah, like they say: practicing on VA patients is as close as you can get to working on real people!

Hey, I didn't say it, "THEY" did!

    Well they did....

I hear a surgical resident once said to a med student...

Each VA patient is good for 5 surgeries... it's you job find out what they are.

I loved every second at Hopkins, consider I left the USMA WP to goand did not even stay at JHU for long. I played on the scrimish team for Lacrosse (nursing a bad kneee) for the school and bounced to Hollywood to do what I am doing now. Not staying is probably one of the regrets I have in life.

My situation was unique, but I can say it is pretty rough to get in. Take every voluntary test you can be it math, or even some extras activities in your community.

My younger brother goes there. He is a freshman. He had really good grades in high school, but I think the fact that he is playing on their water polo team helped him a lot to get in.
