took the exhaust muffler off the car today as I have a leak on front header and this muffler is really heavy. is this normal.....could it be a cat?
It's a series one car built march 75 and says US non-catalyst and as far as I know this isn't suppose to have one. Could it have been changed?
Anyone know exactly how to tell.....numbers....etc...muffler is in good shape with minimal surface rust.
    How about the weight....diff.

No, it's a thermal reactor muffler (it is a very well-insulated muffler which keeps the temperature inside up so the "reaction" between the oxygen in the air injected by the air pump with the unburnt hydrocarbons occurs more completely - the multi-wall construction plus the insulation material makes it heavy).

Should I keep it on the car or should I get a regular lighter muffler? I'm not gopig to get rid of it as it's pretty good shape as it has the fake straight out tips and goes down.
    What should I use?

I gave mine to GT4 joe, he needed it and even though I am a sticker about correctness, this where I drew the line. I got a TUBI which i love but I dont think they make one for the GT4. It weighs about 15 lbs.... The thermo reactor. The original techs called it the barbecue weighs more than that as I could not lift it by myself and I can easily lift 50 lbs....I would keep it and buy a high performance exhaust but that is just my opinion...

    This.
The TR is only for die-hards like me who think they are keeping their cars original, only to suffer in the performance department. Of course California smog rules come into play here, even though a '75 is exempt.
It's your car, build it the way you want it!

I weighed mine when I took it off. I don't remember for sure, but I think it was 80 lbs. It was fricken heavy. I could barely lift it. I don't think there is any horsepower performance improvement to taking it off, but losing 40 lbs will mean something for performance. The Magnaflows I replaced it with sounded nice.

Go your local muffler man and he can whip something up. Nothing pre-made as far as I know.
