Hi guys, Well my birthday is 7-25, and I decided to give myself a new clutch in my 81 GTS. I've read Birdman's how to. He mentions that the bellhowsing is pretty heavy. I don't have a lift, so I will be sitting on the floor with the car on jack stands. I'm just recovering from a bout with Polymialgia, so my arm strength may not be enough to maneuver it in and out. Sorry to hear about the sickness, Rob. I would get back in shape before tackling the job. Get some rest and do a little rehab (you know this already). You definitely want to feel strong enough to do the job before starting it...if you don't, you may overlook something safety related (proper jacking, for example). None of the parts moved around during the clutch work should feel any harder than muscling around a battery. Good Luck.
The clutch job is almost complete. I have a hangar at Gillespie field, and there was more than enough help available. I did what I could but crawling around on the floor is not one of them. I am stuck on installing the clutch arm clevis pin, the one that goes to the turnbuckle, the one that adjusts the distance between the linkage and the clutch arm. I was not the one that took the linkage apart, so I didn't see how it came out. The problem is that there is not enough room above the arm to put the pin in from the top, with the cotter pin on the bottom. The guy that took it out is not available right now. I'm hoping not to hear "put it on before you install the bell housing." I can put it in from the bottom, normally bolts and pins are put in from the top, and the drawing shows it in from the top. All in all the job went ok, with no real surprises. My RA is getting a little better, but not enough for me to get real serious about doing too much. Thanks guys Rob
Sorry to hear about your illness but working on your favorite car is GREAT therapy. After 3 MIs I haven't come across any job on the 308 I couldn't do. I beleive it's mind over matter and makes us stronger. Stress on the other hand, as defined by not being able to drive the 308, is bad for anyone in sickness and in health! cheers, Lost
