For a 355, I was wondering how important are the heat shields that surround the exhaust manifolds and the muffler? If the heat shields are removed, will the heat cause any damage to the engine components?

The reason I'm asking is because there is a track/racing version of the Tubi Headers that don't have heat shields on them.

Also, if I install an aftermarket muffler, tubi, capristo, etc....and I remove the factory muffler heatshield so that the muffler is exposed in the engine bay....will this cause any problems? Any info would be great! Thanks!

The heat shields around the exhaust are to keep the heat from melting the tail lights. I was missing the rear heat shield on my 348, and it melted my tail lights bad. The heat shields around the headers are to reduce ambient temperature in the engine bay. It helps with horse power. The cooler the engine bay is the more power the car can make. You can get the headers that are bare, ceramic coated to keep the heat down, and still have the looks. But keep the ones in place on the exhaust, or you will be buying new tail lights.
