Hi, any ideas on mileage when buying an F40 ? I've seen a car advertised in the U.K at £159,950 with approx 29,000 miles, whilst others with 7,500-12,000 miles are up around £195,000. Whilst I appreciate condition and history are everything I also want to buy a car to use not to sit and look at so I don't want to pay a premium for an ultra low mileage car and "de-value" it by actually doing the unspeakable and driving it ! I suppose in a nutshell am I going to encounter endless reliability issues by buying a car that's actually been used (or is the opposite true with a low mileage car?! ) Any high mileage - and reliable- F40's out there ?

History is everything - if the car with 29 is the one I think it is (visited Australia - recent new tanks etc) the owner was a serious looker-afterer - and if I wanted one to use I'd buy it - another way of looking at it is that saving £ 40 pays for a lot of repairs - it'll be interesting to hear what mileage some of the US cars have (or as someone is bound to point out) claim to have !

F40 that visited australia? Isn't that the car that was heavily hillclimbed? If it is,when i saw the car 18 months ago at the northern ferrari day it looked very used and although i thought it was cool that one was being used as ferrari intended, it would not be on my shopping list.....If it was my money i would go and see Mr B Houghton for advice.

Condition and service history is everything. Disconnecting the speedo in an F40 is easier than just about any other F-car that I have seen. No fancy computers to log all sorts of parameters that give the game away in later cars either.

The car that visited Australia was also the car in the famous EVO magazine test of the 288, F40, F50 and Enzo.

I bought a low mileage car (4600 miles) that had seen light constant use. The car has delivery miles only until 1995 and the got a steady dose of 400-500 miles a year after that. Thorough Maintenace records at 6 month intervals provided as proof. never sat idle again for a long duration.

For me this was perfect. I too wanted a car that I was willing to drive. Here in the states cars come up with under 2000 miles occasionally and I am aware of 2 for sale currently at under 1000 miles.

when I was looking, (a year ago) it was only the super low mile cars (under 2K miles) that I thought would take a significant hit on value, because they seemend to have a pretty good premium for the low miles. I didn't consider any car under 3K mile because I didn't want to pay a premium and then "devalue" it.

for any car over this mileage, I would be more concerned about lack of regular use... If a car has sat for several years despite how many miles it may need to be sorted out...

Have fun with your search... But be patient! It took me about 18 months to find my car. When you find the right car it will make you smile every single day...

Nick Mason's F40 9F40 NPG) has done mega miles - no sure how many exactly, but it's still going strong, although I am sure it is well maintained. The 45,000km car is available for less than £159,950, and I have access to a 21,000km car for £168,000, plus a 30,000 km car at £169,950. I know of one 1000km car that sold for close to £250k, and a well known dealer told me he thought a regular F40 would be at £250k in five to ten years. Don't forget how easy it is to rig the speedo on an F40 - make sure the documents tally up with the mileage, and ensure that condition on a sub 5,000km car is pretty much as new. If I had an F40 I don't think I could do only 600 miles a year in it!

    Hope this helps,

    William

I think it's important that the car has done some miles. To buy an F 40 that has say......only 1000 miles on clock means that it's taken nearly 20 years to do that. Which tells me the car has sat around not being used for a number of them years. This is not good, as seals go and parts get rusted etc. etc.
I would rather buy an F 40 that has say 6000 miles on it. I think 29000 is too many, that's the other end of the stick. When I bought mine, it had 7500 Kilometres on it (5000 miles). Even then, mine had a few, not serious problems which I fixed.
