I am thinking of having my local foreign car guy do the R & R on a water pump for a '79 308, is there a shop manual that lists the time factor for doing this?
If not, how long should it take to do this procedure, I am trying to get a perspective on the job, the shop has done Ferrari work in the past so he is not new to the car.
    thanks, appreciate the info

Unless you are totally useless mechanically and/or don't have the time, I would suggest doing it yourself. It is not easy. It takes time and patience, but once you develop a strategy it should take you about 3-4 hours. You need to remove the RR wheel, inner fender well, unbolt the air conditioning compressor and move it out of the way(don't need to disconnect the lines if careful), remove the rear belt cover, drain the cooling system, remove the air cleaner assembly, and remove and replace the pump. Replace everything, and do the thermostat while you are at it. Also use a new belt and maybe do the timing belts while you are in there. Oh, there goes the 3-4 hours!

I would say about 4 hours. Maybe 6 max if you encounter sticking issues with studs and replace belts and bearing while in there. Its an easy DIY job if you have the patience.

Wasn't there a change to the belt covers that allows the pump to come out without removing the covers? I don't know what year this was done, or which models.

Yes, some have a notch cast in to facilitate WP removal, but older ones don't. I said rear cover but meant front cover previously. If you have the notched style, it will eliminate the need to play with the AC compressor and the belt cover, and save some time, blood, and alot of colorful language! Ask me how I know...

i ended up doing the R&R on rthe water pump myself, and i finally finisd, the 4 hour estimate ended up taking two days but its in and everything seems as it should be. I don't seem to be able to get the water pump/generator belt at my local autoparts store, is this a difficult item, the car is a '79 308 Gts, anyone have a cross reference for this part
    thanks

    Hi MP
You can download the Work Times, Tech Bulletins and Shop manuals from http://dino308gt4.com. The engine/transmission is same on GT4 as your car. The Work Times one is very useful for gauging what something is going to cost at a shop. Also helps you decide if you want to do it yourself or not.

The belts are not auto parts, they're actually Gates polygrip industrial belts. Your local bearing/industrial belt supplier will have them, as will the usual Ferrari parts distributors. Do a search for 'water pump' 'belt' & 'gates'. Should come up with a part #. The part # is basicly the belt's length as I recall. You can also just take your belt into the supplier & he'll help figure out what it is.
