how loud is your Stradale

I was at Silverstone this Saturday on a loud day "102dB drive-by" - amazing cold/dry trackday
Lots of fun with a good bunch.

I got warned, and then black flagged as my Stradale (stock) was constantly above 107dB in the straights (that's not even the downshifting)...real shame as it was running really well on its latest geo

Anyways: how loud is your Stradale, have you lots been told off before as well?

Marshal claimed that Silverstone use to run a fleet of these, and supposedly he was worried that my exhaust may be on its way out and catch fire!!!

note: exhaust has less than 5,000 km in it (in 2013), basically brand new

 

Mine tests 104 but will for sure be louder on the straight as he test is done at lower revs

Where you on Race?
I have also been looking to do a track day but I worry that it will end up being a waste of money/time if I get black flagged.
I did hear that if you are not on race and lift off a bit on the straight it could be OK.

 

I was on RACE (always run it on Race whether city pottling on tracking), but that really doesn't matter as you are well above 4,000rpm most of the time...or am I wrong?

After the "warning" I was shifting up at no more than 7,000rpm and lifting a little in the straights to avoid being told off (unsuccessfully obviously)

355fiorano: true, between the entry fee and the insurance, it ended up being £1,000 for 3hrs...expensive morning (got flagged at noon)

 

why do they limit the noise? seems pretty mysterious.

 

Townhall rules - for the villagers who live around, I guess it really gets loud and annoying all year round.

 

I would welcome that sweet sound.

 

as redneck as it may sound... the best option (other than lifting heavily at measurement device) is to add pipes that direct the sound away from the measurement device. For example, a tail pipe slip on/clamp extension with a bend that would point towards the center of the track to avoid the measurement device on the outside or vice versa.

 

Some people have installed the Forza exhaust controller which has an option to force the exhaust bypass valves (in the tailpipes) closed. You can keep them closed at all times or close them immediately before the noise traps and then open them again when clear of the traps.

I understood that as a road car, but on track? come on!

 

lots of tracks have sound limits. AMP here in Phoenix is one, and IIRC Laguna seca does as well? (And some tracks have various sound max limits on different days and a handful of "exemptions" that allow loud(er) days a few times per year).

not everyone is a fan of loud exhausts. Even if they are, they are not a fan 24-7-365.

Tempted to chance Goldtrack at Silverstone on the 4th Feb with noise limit 105db ...

 

The problem is the drive-bys...my Strad completely stock never recorded below 107dB, and at the end of the straights at 8,000rpm it was closer to 120dB before down shifting

If I'm not gone surfing, and if dry could be tempted to join. Do let me know if you sign up to the Goldtrack.

Seriously? You can't understand why there's a noise regulation on a race track in a populated area when there's a track day?

If you think 102 is bad, go to Laguna Seca. It's 92.

You have to understand that not everyone is as enthusiastic about the sound of a sports car as many of us are - and they are not wrong for thinking like that. And you know what? While I'm a car enthusiast and like a loud raw car on the track, if a race track was built close to where I live, and it didn't enforce any rules, I'd be furious. Not only would it devalue the ever living **** out of my property. It will also ruin every weekend during the summer when the weather is nice.

I hate to be this blunt and rant like this, but if you fail to understand why these rules are there, you need to work on your sense of self entitlement. Everybody has to be there - racers, villagers, nature and so forth. Nothing permits you to make other peoples lives hell.

Are some of these noise regulations at some tracks too strict? Yes they are.
Is some kind of noise regulation needed on Silverstone for track days? Absolutely.

 

I think differently. There are not many new tracks being built in general and not too many anyway. If someone goes to live next to a race track (and probably pays less in the first place ... but that may be another point) then they should expect to get race track noise and not complain after the fact. If they don't like it they should look for a more suitable place to live in the first place. Of course I do not live next to a track and would also probably not choose to live near one so I may not have the complete picture but its just common sense to me.

 

There is an RMA un-silenced day on the 7th March but it is on a Tuesday so need to take day off ... I cant decide which one to do!

I just didn't realize that some tracks are built around populated areas.

 

It's the same everywhere ... here in NL at Zandvoort exactly the same

Not tongue-in-cheek, it would be interesting to find out as I do not know myself.

 

Many tracks were there first. Doesn't stop politics though. Our local track was closed and purchased by the city to turn into a park because higher ups in government bought land nearby on the cheap to develop houses. The track land was later deemed unsuitable for a park and hasn't been touched...

 

It would definitely get annoying but am I missing something here..... maybe you should think about that before you buy a house next to a race track? IMO they have no right to complain, especially at tracks that have been around for a while.

I have always been perplexed by these rules, yet another example of complainers getting what they want. If it was a brand new track in an area where real estate values would be negatively affected I would understand, but otherwise I kinda just view this like living next to an airport or train tracks.

I believe that all businesses need to respect the communities they operate in but this is pushing it. These tracks have been around for a long long time. Obviously airports and train stations are required in any community whereas race tracks are more of a luxury; however, I still think its ridiculous that someone pays extravagant sums of money to track their car and then get kicked off and fined even more just because nearby homeowners didn't realize that living next a race track is a big mistake. Rules are rules and you can only blame yourself if you break them. But these rules are just ridiculous. My 0.02. Cheers
